Session Aims & Highlights (2019-12-04)

Main aims

1. Guiding Charts:  Conduct second live test of new guiding chart feature and begin to use them to improve guiding.
   
2. Targets: Acquire images of a selection of new targets plus monitoring of previous variable stars, nearby stars and comets.

Highlights

• Autoguiding Charts. The new autoguiding charts are working well and are starting to uncover issues with autoguiding. (fixing those issues may be less easy)
• Secondary Scope Focusing. Fixes to bugs in the routine for focusing the secondary scope seeming to be have resolved the issue in previous session and the auto-focusing using SharpCap is now working well.

Lowlights

•   Program crashes.   The AstroMain program crashed twice due to unhandled exceptions.
  (AstroGuard protection worked well and made the observatory safe after the AstroMain program stopped working)

Pre-Session Weather Forecast (API data from darksky.net) Forecast showed clear skies for first 3 hours, with light cloud continuing till dawn (max cloud cover 28%) In the event after beginning observatory operations around 19:15 high cloud developed from 22:00 onwards (becoming most noticeable around 02:00 and 05:00 onwards) which impacted the quality of images (a feature that normally suspends operations when number of stars falls below a specific number couldn't be used due to moonlit conditions)

• Right hand side of 'CCD Temperature Plot began to be cut off after 13.5 hours of activity and began putting out exception in routine that extends the graph every 30 mins
  Fixed 2019-12-09 (AstroMain 3.18.3)
   
• After Obs.Manager called a soft-suspend at 04:05 due to too few stars and then going into suspension at 04:17 the shutter was not closed and remained open for the remainder of the night until the queue eventually ended at 07:00 and the session went into a closing state, where the shutter was closed..  There were no critical weather conditions during this time, to which the observatory will almost certainly have reacted by closing the shutter, but there should be some logic to close the shutter if session has been in suspended state for more than xx minutes. Log at 04:17:05.21 shows message "Sending CloseShutter command to Dome". ASCOM Trace logs show CloseShutter command recieved and sent on 04:17:05.288, and the shutter status changing from Shutter State 0 (Open) to Shutter State 3 (Closing) at 04:17:05.288, confirmed at 04:17:05.304,  but by 04:17:05.538 the shutter status has reverted back to state 0 (Open) .  Logic added to Close Shutter if Session is in suspended mode for more than 10 minutes.  Logic required to repeat closure if it hasn't started after 1 minute.  An email detailing the incident has been sent to Pulsar Observatories on 2019-12-10. An extra layer of protection added to AstroMain to ensure Shutter is closed when request made and doesn't remain open
  Workaround added 2019-12-09 (AstroMain 3.18.3)
   
• RA  Hys and RA MnMv values are sometimes incorrect on Guiding Charts. Hysteris and Min Move parameters seen to taken on the values of other parameters instead of the correct values. Examining code and previous charts shows that the code is attributing the correct parameters under normal operation but can get confused when Guide Output is disabled whilst the Chart Header is being drawn.

• Session stuck in 'Resuming State' for 25 minutes until intervention made (2019-12-09).   Session entered Resuming' State at 18:21:57 but was still in same state at 18:40 waiting for the Shutter to Open.   Program Log show a 'Sending OpenShutter command to Dome' message at 18:21:57.79 , but the Shutter Monitoring routine doesn't report that Shutter beginning to open.  ASCOM trace log shows the driver receiving and sending on the Open Shutter command at 18:21:57.812 and the Shutter Status changing from State 1 (Closed) to State 2 (Opening) at 18:21:57.812, confirmed as opening at 18:21:57.828.  But  at 18:21:58.249 and 18:21:58.795 the Shutter Status has changed back to State 1 (Closed).  An email detailing the incident has been sent to Pulsar Observatories on 2019-12-10.  Code added to AstroMain to drop session state back to Suspended from Resuming if shutter hasn't opened after 100s .
  Workaround added 2019-12-09 (AstroMain 3.18.3)

Continuous Improvement

• Consider coming into targets from certain Dec direction (north or south) so that Declination backlash can be taken up.

• Look into performing own Pulse Guiding in order to overcome limitations of scope/PHD2 . Moved from On-Hold to Closed status following review 2021-05-16.   Items is not necessary.

Session Attempted but cloud conditions didn't allow more than a few minutes of testing a new feature of graphing Telescope tracking behaviour with PHD2 guiding output disabled (ie turned off.)

Attempted Session (2019-12-09)

Session Attempted but was was short-lived due to a bug in the Pulsar Dome System which stopped a Shutter Opening,  a bug in the AstroMain/CCDSoft  and sky conditions which rapidly deteriorated.
