Session Aims & Highlights (2021-06-11)

Main aims

  1. AstroMain.  Try out AstroMain 3.40.5, following further refactoring of code.  Check out fixes and enhancements. Check for any new issues / introduced bugs.
  2. Guiding.  Collect information to understand the impact of focuser movements & associated change in weight distribution on guiding
  3. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions

MeadeGeneric Telescope Driver (1.2.0 & 1.3.0)

Earlier 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 versions of MeadeGeneric had an issue whereby the driver woudn't report the actual Tracking State of the connected telescope (when using Get Tracking) and wouldn't change the Tracking State of the connected scope (when using Set Tracking) and local workaround was implemeted in which :AP# and :AL# commands are used to directly set the Tracking state of the telescope from the AstroMain Control program.

The Get/Set Tracking issue was raised in the MeadeGeneric project site  ( https://bitbucket.org/cjdskunkworks/meadeautostar497/issues/24/get-set-tracking ). Based on comments from the MeadeGeneric author on 2021-07-03 that implied the Get/Set Tracking fixes had been incorporated in version 1.3 ,  the MeadeGeneric 1.3.0 (.352) version was installed onto the Observatory Computer on 2021-07-16.

Daytime testing unfortunatey showed that the 1.3.0 version didn't actually allow Tracking State to be changed (the driver reports CanSetTracking=False). Whilst this behaviour is consistent with 1.3.0 notes in the Release History documentation (https://bitbucket.org/cjdskunkworks/meadeautostar497/wiki/Release%20History)  it is inconsistent with the gitbucket postings associated with Get/Set Tracking Issue.

Daytime testing of the 1.3.0 version showed that the CanSetTracking=False condition causeed  DeviceHub (6.5.1.4) to crash when an attempt is made to change the Tracking checkbox setting on DeviceHub's telescope tab. This makes the 1.3.0 version unsuitable for use during live sessions  [The author of DeviceHub has made a one-line change (not yet elevated as at 2021-07-18) to DH that will cause the Tracking checkbox on the Telescope Motion tab to be grayed out when CanSetTracking is false ]

Due to potential for DeviceHub crashes and until the MeadeGeneric is updated to include proper handling of the scope's Tracking State,  the 1.3.0.352 version  was un-installed from the Observatory Computer and the preceding 1.2.0 (.344) version installed instead on 2021-07-18.   This version includes a number of fixes/improvements to the version 1.1.0 (.337) that was being used for recent live sessions.

Daytime testing confirmed that the 1.2.0 version was working ok and could be used with earlier local workaround using AP and AL commands.

2021-08-16
Issue was eventually fixed  in the 1.3.1.361 version of MeadeGenericDriver (dated 2021-08-04) which was installed onto the Observatory Computer on 2021-08-16.  Daytime testing confirmed that the earlier issue with the driver has been fixed/implemented, and Set/GetTracking is now fully implemented and working.
