Session Aims & Highlights (2022-05-14)

Main aims

  1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
  2. AstroMain.  Check out new 3.15.7 version, ensure that it has not introduced any new issues or problems.
  3. Dome. Check that recent issue with dome positioning (position inaccuracies of 8 deg when parking the dome at end of sessions S1008 and S1009)
have been fixed by dome re-calibration of 2022-05-12.

Upgrade to DeviceHub 6.6.0.8

DeviceHub was upgraded on Development & Observatory Computers today (2022-05-15) from version 6.6.0.6 to a new 6.6.0.8 version.

The new version closes a 'up to 3s' timing hole and could perhaps affect an issue (Dome didn't appear to move during telescope slew) seen on one particular slew in session S1009 (2022-05-11). However it only affects operation when clients use the SlewToTarget or SlewToTargetAsync methods to start a telescope slew. It should eliminate the possibility that the dome would be given an old set of coordinates to slew to which could cause the dome to follow the scope to the new location rather than going straight to the correct azimuth.

(After seeking clarification regarding 6.6.0.8 it is confirmed that the code is specifically relates to a potential timing hole associated with SlewToTarget and SlewToTargetAsync methods.  The SlewToCoordinates and SlewToCoordinatesAsync methods (used by AstroMain/TheSky6) weren't affected by this small 'bug').

6.6.0.7 Release Notes
- Move device drivers from separate assemblies into the DH executable.
- Reduce disconnect delays due to garbage collection.
- Add startup and shutdown logging from LocalServer per ASCOM 6.6 template.
- Fix minor bug in logging of empty SupportedActions property.

6.6.0.8 Release Notes
- Changed Telescope driver to set Target RA and Dec through the telescope manager to ensure that they are immediately available to the DomeManager if a SlewToTarget is initiated.

Results
The first live observing session using DeviceHub 6.6.0.8 will be S1011 (date TBA).

Observation regarding POTH Error and DeviceHub updates (Development Computer)
The issue seen on the Development Computer (only) whereby the TheSky6 program gives a scope connection error saying that POTH is not configured on computer, might be related to the installation of new DeviceHub versions.  The further occurence of the 'POTH' error today (2022-05-16) after installing DH 6.6.0.8 yesterday makes me think there is a possible relationship.  The isue has to be fixed each time it occurs by going into TeleAPI settings and in place of a blank telescope explicity re-choosing  'Device Hub Telescope'.  The issue only affects the Development Computer and is not seen on the Observatory Computer.   See S909 (2021-08-27), S920 (2021-10-03).
