Session Aims & Highlights (2022-11-27)

Main aims

1. 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann. Acquire further images of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, as followup to images taken in last two sessions (S1061 & S1062) . Look out for expanding coma following recent 4 mag outburst
2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
3. AstroMain.  Check new AstroMain version (3.58.5) for any issues introduced by several recent changes, bug fixes and additions.

• Linking of Cam2 Guide Reference for Target 9/41 (SS Cyg) reported an incorrect Scope2 Offset (20:20).  Whilst correct RA/Dec coordinates were reported following linking Guide_Reference image with ASTAP the reported Scope 2 Offset  (86.11') is incorrect.  This lead to Cam1 FOV not being drawn on the Guide_Ref JPG Picture.  The same problem also affected Target 3/40(DY Per, Scope2 Offset 81.30'). It also affected SS Cyg target during the previous S1062 session (2022-11-25). Tracing added to AstroMain 3.58.5 was useful in diagnosing/confirming the issue and the solution.  (see Investigation - Incorrect Scope 2 Offset leading to Incorrect/Missing Cam1 FOV on Guide Reference pictures). Fixed in AstroMain 3.58.6, by using a new variable SavedBestFromASTAP (boolean) and changes to PlateSolveImage() and LinkCam2GuideFrame(), so that if 'SavedBestFromASTAP' = True the LocateInfo2 coords are taken from SavedBestRa2000 and SavedBestDec2000.

• ScopeMode was unexplainably set to briefly to 'Suspending (7)' at when SessionState transitioned from 'Resuming to 'Running Again' (19:03:47).   A 19:03:02 the session was moved to 'Resuming' state when conditions became favourable again, and the Shutter was opened.  This was completed at 19:03:47:12.  At 19:03:47.24 , momentarily before session moved to "Running Again",  logs record ScopeMode being set to 'Suspending (7)'.  Moments later at 19:03:56.82 the logs record ScopeMode being set to 'Slewing (3)'.  Investigating code shows that SetScopeMode(ScopeMode.Suspending) is called from 3 places in ObsManager:  one in its "When TheSky6 Running" section and two in its  "Must Close Routine" section.  All three of these can be ruled out as the required conditions either couldn't have applied and it can be shown that the consequential actions (reporting, closing shutter, raising HardSuspend, raising alerts) did not occur.  Other possibilities are that SetScopeMode is called using a variable that has the value ScopeMode.Suspending.    This could be SetScopeMode(PriorScopeMode) in CheckForStableCCDTemperature() routine or
  SetScopeMode(SavedScopeMode) in ObsManager's  "Resuming" Section just before calling SetState_RunningAgain().  The latter situation is most consistent with the facts
  SavedScopeMode is only in SetState_Suspended() immediately before SetScope(ScopeMode.Suspended).  which in this case was 'Suspending (7)' This is clearly not relevent and the 'current state (Resuming (6) is most applicable until it next gets set after entering the 'Running' session state.  Code line 'SetScopeMode(SavedScopeMode)' has been commented out.

• 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann not being put on the Observing Plan even though defined in AstroPlan/Database as a Tier I Must Include target.  This Tier I target and a primary objective for the session was not included in the night's Observing Plan. The same thing happened in previous S1062 session and the following S1064 session.  Is this because it is a non-sidereal target ? Examination of the Target Form shows that the read-only Active' checkbox can become checked when a different appropriate target status is chosen (eg ToObserve, Reschedule or back to Regular Target), but when the target is saved it resets to be unchecked. and this explains why the target isn't getting included in the plan. There is no issue with the Schedular.  Form saving will be evaluated with debugging to understand what is happening. Fixed 2022-11-29 (bug had been introduced 2022-11-05 as .TargetState which is needed for setting .Active correctly was moved below the .Active assignment).  Database checked for historic inconsistancies due due to .Active has been incorrectly assigned, as a result Active changed to False for 159 targets and changed to True for 22 targets.  Arcibe

• Unable to create a useful Image Set Description from FIT files created by Nebulosity 4 (post-session analysis). After using Nebulosity 4 to normalise and align images of Jupiter (taken originally by CCDSoft) the use of AstroMain's 'Image Set Description' facility produced a result like
     2 x 0s exposure (average combine), 0x0 binning, Filter
   0001-01-01 00:00 UT (#1063127-20)
  instead of the expected result which would be generated from the original CCDSoft FIT images (ie unmodified by Nebulosity 4)
     2 x 0.12s exposure (average combine), 1x1 binning, R Filter
   2022-11-27 23:08 UT (#1063120-27)
Examination of the FITS headers from the original FIT files and the dervied FIT files produced by Nebulosity show that most of the Fits header items are not carried forward by Nebulosity in particular TIME-OBS, EXPOSURE, CCDXBIN, FILTERX are not carried forward which are critical items for AstroMain's Description.   Although the Nebulosity derived FITs file contains DATE-OBS keyword (from which TimeObs can be derived) teh current BuildImageDescription() doesnt get as far as reading the DateTime because as it first meets and exception when attempting to read FitsKeyword ("EXPOSURE"). At partial fix put into AstroMain 3.58.8 allows the date/time to be output in the description but can't do anything about completing the exposure, binning, filter part of the description since the data is simply not available in the Fits header created by Nebulosity 4.

  Potential solutions might be i) use some other program to normalise/align planetary images,  ii) have a new routine in which critical keywords are backfilled into the Nebulosity derived FITS files before running BuildImageDescription() ,  iii) Transfer the Image Array into Aligned folder copies of original CCDSoft files. (ii or iii would use image number from file name like ".im1063120" to match up the original CCDSoft image with the Nebulosity produced image.
  Fixed in AstroMain 3.58.8 using new Button routine 'ReApply Keywords' on ImageSet/Special tab that calls a new ReApplyKeywords() routine that goes each FIT file in an ImageSets 'aligned' folder, finds the FIT file in the ImageSet 'reduced' folder with the same image number, and writes some 50 FitsKeywords from the original 'reduced' file to the 'aligned' file.

Small Defects

• When RainThreat occurs the log file unexpectedly records "Critical Conditions: Light" instead of "Rain Threat" .

• Foc1 Focus Profile 8 (U And) shows a poor match between best fit line and FWHM data points (23:32). The 'best-fit' line fits data on left hand side of profile and not the right hand side and produced a proposed 'best-focus' position at ~4330, which looks clearly wrong. QC check however took care of things and a suitable best focus position of 3948 was determined nevertheless. Propose to replay the dataset in AstroMain in order to understand why the FocusProfile() routine gave this fit line.  (see Fig 1).  Playback showed the same anomalous curve fit was produced.  Examining logs in detail showed that the max ADU value peaked at a value of 46457 (focus point 7/14). Based on this value any faint points with a max ADU less than 10% of this value (ie < 4646) were invalidated.  Due to cloud the first part few points in the profile were taken at time of poor sky transparency which unnaturally suppressed the max ADU value in these focus frames and led to the first 4 points on the right hand side of the graph being invalidated.   This is normally a valid technique for suppressing points that might otherwise effect the generation of a good curve fit. Unfortunately these 4 points which had good FWHM values and were necessary for correctly defining the curve, were excluded.  This case is a relatively rare & unfortunate one and ultimately didn't lead to an imaging issue. It it is not proposed to the change the Focus Profile algorithum to try to accomodate this particular issue where the sky conditions are changing significantly during the short time that focus profile is taken (in this case 98s,  23:32:52 - 23:34:29).  If there is cloud the is a fair chance that this will in any case effect the imaging or guiding.   Issue closed after review 2022-11-30.

• Consider splitting the "Suspended" observatory state into two :  "Suspending" and "Suspended".   The 'Suspending' state comes first and covers the period of time from when the job queue has paused (following the raising of HardSuspend or SoftSuspend flag by ObsManager) until the fully closed, when the state is moved on to 'Suspended'. In 'Suspended' state the task moves to monitoring for improvements in weather conditions that would allow state to both to 'Resuming'.  Dividing in this way is logical and brings some clarity to the tasks & involved, similar the way that 'Resuming' and 'Running' are distinguished. This involves significant changes & critical checks in AstroMain, but also small changes to AstroGuard, AstroVOE, AstroObsCam.  A review shows AstroMain contains 29 code references to SessionState.Suspended, 8 references to SetState_Suspended().  SetState_Suspending() and SessionState.Suspending created in AstroMain 3.58.6 in preparation for change.

• Query. Observatory / Manager Tab was showing Rain Threat 16% but the adjacent field was showing 65%.  Next 15 Min Precip field was showing "0.3 mm/hr 16%".    Examining code the txtPrecipNext15minProbability field showing 16% is set from the value Env.Forecast.PrecipNext15minProbability by UpdateSynopsisFields() routine,  whilst the txtCriticalRainThreat field showing 65% is set to the value  Env.CriticalRainThreat also by the UpdateSynopsisFields() routine.  Both Env.Forecast.PrecipNext15minProbability and Env.CriticalRainThreat originate from the Synopsis/Scorecard record.

• Add ability to retract a submitted Target Of Opportunity. Add the ability to retract/cancel a ToO after it has been submitted. Until the moment that the ToO is actually entered into the JobQueue in AstroMain, it resides in a ToO Queue where it is regularly reviewed and compared against current target and next target in the job queue, pending its insertion into the queue. For a variety of reasons, change in mind,  a better plan, dealys due to weather there is a potential need to retract a ToO from the ToO queue. Currently the  ToO queue has to be allowed to run its course and only once the ToO is inserted into queue and running can it be aborted or disabled.  This would be implemented in two ways, from Target's Insert ToO Form in AstroPlan to retract a specific target or from AstroMain to retract all ToO's in the ToO queue.
