Main aims

  1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions (especially wind)
  2. LX200 Re-Focusing.  Refocus LX200 Telescope system (adjusting primary mirror to achieve so that is at focus at around the 3500 DRO midpoint position on the TCF-S focusser)

Investigation - Drift in Best Focus Position, LX200 Primary Mirror Focus Slipping / Mirror Lock Not Working (2023-09-30)

Issue
Best Focus Position associated with the TCF-S Focuser attached to 12" LX200 Telescope is noted to be drifting to lower values, often over the course of a single session, in a manner than can not be explained by temperature changes. Critically the Best Focus Position is approaching the lower end of 0-7000 range in focuser positon for the TCF-S Focuser, and might mean that the TCF-S Focuser can no longer bring the telescope to best focus.

The Focus Position on the LX200 has been noted to be drifting on a number of occasions during the last 2-3 years (eg S1057 (2022-11-01), see Focusing - Temperature and Primary Mirror Slippage Effects (2022-11-01).

Description
Routine focusing of the main scope is achieved by adjustments of the computer controlled TCF-S Focuser attached to the visual back of the LX200 telescope.  Adjustments are made when the filter is changed (based on a focus offset for each filter relative to Clear Filter) or the when OTA Temperature changes (based on a base position for the Clear Filter at 0deg/C and an function of position change/degC and a zero deg position.  

A focus adjustment is then added/subtracted which is difference between the calculated best focus and the actual best focus.  This is determined by creating a Focus Profile  that measures FWHM of a 'focus star' across a range of focuser positions from which the actual best focus is determined by curve fitting.

Normally as the ambient temperature falls (loosely tracked by a corresponding fall in the OTA Tube temperature) the best focus position shifts to higher DRO positions on the TCF-S Focuser, and when ambient and OTA Tube temperature rise the best focus position shifts to lower DRO positions on the TCF-S Focuser.

However recently it has been observed that even though ambient and OTA Tube temperature fall over the course of a session (as the typically do over the course of a clear, cloudless night) measured best focus positions don't show an increase in DRO values but are either relatively flat or actually decrease.   See the following example from Session S1147 (2023-09-20).

Also over the course of several sessions it can be noted that the general position of measured best focus is gradually falling to lower and lower DRO values (e.g 303) and begin to closely approach the bottom end of the TCF-S Focus Range (0-7000). If continued this could place the telescope system in a situation where focus profiles measured are unable to determine a properly QCed best focus positions and  where automated adjustments of TCF-S focuser to stay at Best Focus could no longer be made.  See following example from Session S1150 (2023-09-28).

When the later situations occurs the telescope's primary mirror has to be manually adjusted in order to bring the telescope's focus position back to a position corresponding to a position roughly midway in the TCF-S's 0-7000 DRO range (i.e. to a DRO value around 3500).

Analysis
Problem analysis indicates that the cause of the ongoing issues is slippage of the LX200's primary mirror and this is due to the primary mirror not being locked or that it was locked but has become loose/unlocked. Attempts to lock the primary mirror at end of primary mirror focus adjustment in session S1151 failed , the mirror lock knob could not be turned counterclockwise to lock the mirror.

Overall focus behaviour over the course of multiple positions has ruled out an initial alternative theory that the unexpected focus behaviour was due to seasonal changes in temperature of atmosphere or effects of weather fronts (warm/cold fronts) moving across the region changing the temperature and properties of the atmosphere that are not necessarily producing changes in ambient temperature in the Observatory on the same time scale. Drift in best focus is noted to always be in one direction which is presumed to be related to the effect of gravity tending to pull the primary mirror in one particular direction. (telescope tube is normally only pointing horizontally or upwards, only very rarely during particular slews is the telescope tube pointing in a downward direction.
