Session Aims & Highlights (2023-12-19)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. 12P/Pons-Brooks. Acquire images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks which has been undergoing an outburst.

Highlights

• Targets. 9/36 planned targets observations were completed, with 7 other targets partially completed. Other targets were missed due to a driver re-installation (DomeLink) taking longer than expected, and lost due to cloud, rain or wind
• 12P/Pons-Brooks. Images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks were not acquired due to weather conditions
•  Dome slewing. Dome Slewing was ok with none of the 19 slews affected by any significant delay or hold-up,

• StackCam2Frames operations for NGC 2126 and M101 using batch shell calls to Siril-Cli both failed.  Examining siril.log files indicated that NGC 2126 stacking failed due to there not being enough free disk space to perform the (register) operation, whilst M101 stacking failed due there not being enough stars in reference image to perform alignment. StackCam2Frames (NGC 2126) was successfully run on Development Computer with its larger free space, using new SubmitStackCam2Frames() and RunStackCam2Frames() hard-coded call routines. StackCam2Frames (M101) was successfully run once the first couple of light frames with very few stars (cloud) had been removed from the dataset. Issue closed 2023-12-20.  A separate Continuous Improvement ticket has been raised and completed to report key messages from siril.log when stacking fails to make it easier/quicker to establish the reason for the failure.

Small Defects

• Session State moved from 'Suspending' to 'Suspended' before the shutter had closed (22:04 ). After conditions had deteriorated at 22:04 the session state moved from 'Running' to 'Suspending' during which the shutter was requested to close.  Whilst the Shutter had physically closed after 43s or so,  the dome hadn't officially indicated it had closed when the session state moved to 'Suspended' state, where the Dome has eventually reported to be closed.  ObsManager is presumed to have a timeout on the 'Suspending' state after which it then moves the state onto Suspended.   Due to the recently appeared issue with Pulsar Dome system where results of a dome close can be delayed by up to 135s or so, the timeout used in ObsManager is too short. Fixed in AstroMain 3.65.8 timeouts that were at 60s and 120s were changed to 140s and 140s.

• There were gaps in the CCD Temperature Chart and Cam2 Temperature in some of the data curves. There were gaps in both Camera Temperature Charts during the night.  Gaps first noticed in the in CCDTemp Chart where there were gaps in 'Cooling Power' (and corresponding flat-linng of CCD Set Temperature) at 20:49 - 22:00 and at 01:55 - 02:18 (Fig 1). The gaps are also present in the session Monitor File with data-records every 2 minutes There were also gaps in Cam2 Temp curve in 'Cam2Temp' Chart at the same time.  The issue either hasn't been seen before or at least not recently.  Whilst investing failed SiriL job and issues with long time to download 'SharpCap Files' from the Observatory, it became apparent that the gaps are associated with time intervals for NGC 2126 (20:49-21:59) and M101 (01:56 - 02:17) when Cam1 was being used for Guiding by PHD2 and Cam2 was been used for imaging with SharpCap and the camera temperatues were not accessible.  Issue is explained and the issue closed since the gaps are to be expected.

• Copying of SharpCap files from Observatory took a very long time (post-session).  Copying of SharpCap files took a very long time and as a result the entire process to download files from the S1176 session files took around 3 hours .  The session contained two targets that used Cam2 for Imaging and image frames are individually very large. Main issue on this occasion is that the copy process is not only copying the raw files for these 2 targets (2.9 GB) but also processed files created by SiriL (20.1 GB).  This might have happened because the Siril script operation failed part way through and cleanup steps weren't conducted ? or AstroMain didn't clean-up the folder as it should.  AstroMove copies the entire SharpCap Session Directory, and it would be difficult to change it so that it didn't copy any 'process' folders. Probably the best thing is that AstroMain deletes 'process' folders' created during run-time. Although this would mean these files would be available for any debugging of issues they could be regenerated again (through may or may not be identical) by rerunning scripts, and deleting them helps to prevent the Observatory' Computer disk space from filling up and causing a major issue during a live session. Fix implemented in AstroMain 3.65.8 by moving the clean-up of '../process' folder to after the 'wait on Siril-Cli operation' loop and thereby make it independant of the operation result (success or failure). When StackCam2Frames was rerun on the Development Computer the operation to delete the '/process' folder failed with the exception "The process cannot access the file 'r_pp_light_00001.fit' because it is being used by another process".

• Session's Result Chart showing multiple target name's overposting at second row position in the left hand table (17:54 - 19:03). Investigating established that the 6 targets with overposted names were all targets with missed stars to a unexpected delays whilst DomeLink driver was reinstalled. Fixed in AstroMain 3.65.8 using new variable Session.ResultSequenceNo as a counter that is incremented by 1 each time that AzAltChart.AddAzAltResult() is called.  Session.ResultSequenceNo is saved to Session.dat to allow the counter to be read back in in the Session is restarted.

Continuous Improvement

• SearchForBestPark routines should round SearchAz (CentreAz) to nearest 0.2 (07:12). After conducting Wide Search and finding BestParkAz at 90.5, a Narrow search was conducted which resulted in a search 87.5, 87.7 87.9, 88.1 etc.  Whilst funcitionally this works, cosmetrically it looks better if the search is 87.6, 87.8, 88.0, 88.2 etc. Implemented in AstroMain 3.65.8 ( if SearchStep = 0.2 then SearchAz = Math.Round(SearchAz / 0.2) * 0.2 ). Also reduced the number of session events that are generated by SearchForBestPark routines from 3 to 2

• What happens to bat file associated with StackCam2Frames submission of bat file to Siril-Cli. The Batch file is written to More Programs/StackFrames.bat bebatch file is overwritten if/when a new Secondary Scope Imaging Target is run. Consider if we should place a copy in the SharpCap ImageSet Folder or even run it from there.  Query has been answered and the ticket is therefor closed.

• Examine if it is possible to extract key error(s) from Siril log and report them in AstroMain. When Cam2 inages are aligned and stacked by submission of a 'bat' file to Siril-Cli during a live session, a wait routine in AstroMain's job executor checks the size of the associated Siril log file and if file size hasn't changed for 10s it concludes that Siril processing has finished or has frozen. If the expected stack image isn't present it concludes that the operation had failed. Whilst the SiriL log file can be later opened and reviewed, it would be helpful if AstroMain could examine the file at the time and extract/report the key error(s), that prevented a successful operation. Implemented in AstroMain 3.65.8 by calling new routine 'ReportSirilFailureLines(LogPath As String) '. Lines that are associated with / helpful in diagnosing failures in the two Siril run in session S1176 are listed by the new routine. Extra 'custom' search strings can be added in due course as they are found in future cases.
