Session Aims & Highlights (2024-03-13)

Main aims

  1. 12P/Pons-Brooks. Acquire images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks which has been undergoing regular outbursts.
  2.  Power Cut Tests. Perform a live session test of the Observatory response to a brief power cut (10s) and to a longer power cut (10 min). This follows installation of a UPS System to provide battery back up for telescope and addition of Outage Management procedures to AstroMain's Obs.Manager and other improvements and new features to AstroMain, AstroWeather and AstroAllSky.
  3. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
  4. AstroMain. Test new 3.66.6 version of AstroMain in a live session, following mutliple changes in association with a new Power Monitor, a UPS Monitor and significant changes to the Obs.Manager. Purpose is to verify there are no significant sideeffects or issues with the new version / new code.

Investigation - Pulsar Dome Settings reset themselves after a power outage

Issue
During Power Outage Testing the Pulsar Dome settings somehow all became reset , causing dome to lose its azimuth pointing and its settings.
After restarting the dome it believed that it's Azimuth was some 90° different from its actual physical azimuth.

This resulted in

Description
Following the installation of a UPS System to provide battery backup to the observatory's LX200 Telescope & SBIG Camera (2024-03-03), live tests was carried out during the S1197 session, involving firstly a 30s outage and later on a 11 min outage. The short outage proceeded fine, but the longer outage test produced very anomalous dome

Before the outage the dome was at Az. 278° but after the outage (with its resultant dome restart) the dome carried the value Az 0° .  Besides loosing its knowledge of its last pre-outage Azimuth, Relay Settings also became reset which seemingly caused the shutter to close when conditions were ok and would have prevented the shutter was closing if conditions were bad (a potential critical issue). Dome Park positioned was seemingly also reset to Az 0°  (equivalent to physical Az 278°), and explains where the search for Park Position in Az range 75-105° (equivalent to physical Az 345 to 015°) failed to work as dome was working 90° away from the correct position (physical Az 90°) and why the Dome was found pointing in a northerly direction the following morning.

Dome was moved to its correct park Az to enable shutter battery recharging  and then later in the day the dome setting were reentered and a reclaibration perform, with Home at 180° and Park at Az 90°.  This is the first time this has happened and it is unclear why it might have done on this particular occassion. It is put down as a glitch but it shows that the dome system isn't infalliable and could benefit from being powered from a UPS System with battery backup instead of directly from the main. The ticket is closed.

Analysis
For some reason all the settings in the Pulsar Dome Controller reset themselves to default values and didn't carry the settings previously entered for the Dome.
Current Azimuth and Park Azimuth were both reset to the value 0.0° .   Relay settings were set to 'NC' and no longer carried the required value 'NO' . Times were also reset.

It is likely that the Dome reset in response to a particular current/voltage state during the power-off or during the subsequent power-on, since this issue hasn't previously been seen during other power outages or during operations to restart the Pulsar Dome using a smart plug connected to the Observatory's Zigbee Network.

Investigation - Zigbee Shutter sensors not showing correct states after a power outage

Issue
Zigbee sensors located at Top & Bottom Shutter did not showing correct states after a power outage test during the session (22:35-22:46)

Description
A 10.7 minute power outage test was conducted starting at  22:35:18 to help understand the robustness of the Observatory systems to a power outage during a live session.  Following the test he Zigbee sensors located at Top & Bottom Shutter did not showing correct states.
