Session Aims & Highlights (2019-10-24)

Main aims

1. SharpCap:  Execute the third live session test involving integrated SharpCap/AstroMain imaging, under better sky conditons
2. Targets: Acquire images of a selection of new targets and monitoring of previous variable stars, nearby stars and comets.

Highlights

• AstroMain . Apart from 1 small incident the program performed well.
   - the one incident was that progress through Observatory Shutdown (Session State = 'Closing') stalled after parking scope and required intervention to enable the Session to finish)
• SharpCap. Integrated session including SharpCap imaging of targets using TS 80mm/f6 APO secondary scope and ZWO ASI 178MC camera again worked
   - Targets specified for SharpCap imaging in AstroPlan, where loaded to AstroMain as part of the session's observing plan
   - 'Sharpcap targets' were requested for imaging in SharpCap by the Job Queue via ShCap Server (AstroShCap)
   - Control of the ZWO ASI 178MC Camera was seeminglessly switched between SharpCap and PHD2 as required
   - LiveStack pictures were automatically uploaded and displayed on website

Lowlights

• SharpCap.  There were several issues
  - LiveStacking didn't seem to start with a good 'first' frame, which then prevented the alignment of following frames
  - There were some false aborts, where the TakeImageSet/LiveStacking seemed to abort itself
  - There were other false aborts where AstroMain job executor felt that the SharpCap job had finished, when in fact it hadn't
  - Only semi-useful frames where produced by manual interventation to restarting LiveStack in order to get a fresh first good frame
  - SharpCap file name templates on Observatory Computer were manually setup beforehand to use the new standards defined on Development Computer
    (leading to displaced files)

Major Issues -

• Multiple Focus Profiles failing with message "Failed QC Check (Range)" . Problem noticed during remote monitoring. Looking at the Report Messages showed each profile has 3-6 steps with the message "Failed Outside allowed step range".  This was where the focuser was requested to go to positions beyond its hard limit of 7000 steps. Problem was caused by a combination of having the scope's primary mirror focus position set to far from the centre point  of the TCF-S' s center point (3500) and cold temperatures forcing the best focus towards the higher DRO positions.  The issue had to be resolved by visiting the observatory and adjusting the focus position (23:45 to 00:12). As always this is a difficult task because once the focus is adjusted the focus poistion is then changed when the locking the primary mirror (the operation isn't performed enough times to develop a optimised way of achieving this task)

• Reinforced rubber edge trim around the dome flange became totally detached  At some point during the session the edge trim became detached and then proceeded to peel itself off as the dome rotated. This was only noticed when the observatory was visited the next morning. No damage seems to have been done apart from some abrasion to the rubber strip as it was forced through one of the metal roof retaining clamps.  It is assumed that the incident happened at 03:14 when slew to GCVS GK Per took an anomalously long time (6.9 mins to complete a 137deg  azimuthal slew (i.e. a speed of only 20 deg/min).  The rubber strip was re-fitted to the flange taking care to press the reinforcement tighter in order to make it fit tighter to the dome flange especially at the the two ends.  This problem happened once before if I remember correctly.

Minor Issues

• TCF-S Focuser DRO and OTA temperature values lost at 23:05.  Monitor data shows that TCF-S data was lost at 23:05 but the first 'error' was not seen until 23:22 when Focus Profiling started to produce the error:   "TCF-S Focuser... Fail Exception: Operation cannot be completed. Device is not connected." .  The problem was resolved at 23:39 by aborting the job queue, stopping all observatory services and then restarting the session. TCF-S data resumed at 23:42.    It's unclear if the issue was in anyway associated with the TCF-S focuser going up to its hard limit of 7000 DRO. Restarting services may or may not have had a knock on effect of causing the ASCOM Scope Driver to be lost to AstroMain

• ASCOM Scope lost to AstroMain program at 23:40.   Shortly after restarting Observatory Services at 23:40 , the Telescope was connected in TheSky, where the routine showed an issue with data from the objScope (POTH / ASCOM Scope) as Ra/Dec values where vcNull (-99)    vcNull were also shows at Telescope.Connect at 00:17. Just after this it was noticed that Eventually it was noticed  that report message started with "Scope (objScope) not found, e.g.   "Turn Off Tracking..              Fail       Scope (objScope) not found"
  The problem was resolved by parking the scope (using POTH) , closing down the entire Observatory Software suite, and then restarting the session again (this was done as it the proven / most definitive fix to the problem, though not necessarily the most optimal ).  It would seem that the objScope wasn't  attached when re-starting the observatory services at 23:30. The message  "POTH.Telescope (COM7):     Fail     Telescope Power State is unknown" is relevant.   Checking the ode of Scope.Connect show that if  Scope.PowerState = vcNull the routine is exited without creating objScope / without setting objScope.connected = True.     Problem only occurs when restarting Observatory Services and happens because the call to start the Scope Service comes too quickly after starting Observing Monitoiring and PowerBox Services.

• Current Session WebPage showing previous session's NightSummaryPlot6 rather than the plot for the current night.   This is a re-occuring problem.   The 'near zero sized' flag file is not being uploaded to the website by AstroPlan's FTP File Uploader when a new session is started.  Fixed by reinitialising FTPQueue at start of NewSession , before ResetLiveFiles is called.

Continuous Improvement

• Need to make the image description produced by AstroShCap's TakeImageSet show smartened exposure times.  In VB.Net cstr(10.00) gives 10,   but in Python str(10.00) gives 10.0,   so the description has "50x10.0s" instead of intended 50x10s.  If exposure was 0.5s I still need to see 50x0.5s.

• The LiveStack image produced for xxxx was too green looking, sky background green.  How to modify either the camera settings or display settings to give a nice black sky background and 'true' looking star colours ?

• With Ambient Temperature of 1 degC, CCD SetPoint could have been updated to -25degC instead of remaining at -20degC
  Revise ProposedSetPointTemperatures to point to -25deg when temperature falls below 2 degC
  Done (AstroMain 3.17.5). Small tweak made. Monitor over future sessions

Detached Rubber Trim

At some point during the session on the night 2019-10-24 the Reinforced rubber edge trim that normally sits around the dome flange edge became detached and then proceeded to peel itself off as the dome rotated. This was only noticed when the observatory was visited the next morning. No damage seems to have been done apart from some abrasion to the rubber strip as it was forced through one of the metal roof retaining clamps.  It is assumed that the incident happened at 03:14 when one particular slew (to GCVS GK Per) took an anomalously long time taking 6.9 mins to complete a 137deg  azimuthal slew (i.e. a speed of only 20 deg/min). 

The rubber strip was re-fitted to the flange taking care to press the reinforcement tighter in order to make it fit tighter to the dome flange especially at the the two ends.  I think this is the second time that this has happened.
