Session Aims & Highlights (2021-10-10)

Main aims

1. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
2. AstroMain Test fix in AstroMain 3.43.5 to major problem in the last session (S922, 2021-10-09) which was causing a 60s delay before each image frame
3. Foc2 Focusing.  Test revised code for selecting best focus in Foc2 Wide Search Focusing using a new Max Pixel weighted FWHM method

Highlights

•   AstroMain.  AstroMain 3.43.5 confirmed to have fixed the major problem (60s delay before every image frame) that affected the last session.

• Whilst testing new code on Development Computer the following exception occurred with Taking Single Target .  Exception details:

  At the same time TheSky6 giving dialog messages ' The selected telescope driver is missing the RightAscension propert' & 'The ASCOM Scope is missing the Connected Property'.  Closed and restarted software, after which the routine worked ok with no repetition of the issue.

• The "Focus Target:" section of the Target Info Chart shows an inappropriate Profile No in the particular cases where focusing fails. In situations where focusing fails  (eg due to dim star / can not far star etc) profile no should be given.

• Guide Summary table on Latest Session webpage showing only 4 guide runs instead of 7 runs expected. Guide Summary Data table only showing data for Guide Runs 1 to 4.  Guide runs 5 to 7 are missing even though the uploaded Guiding Charts show that these guide runs, and the (guidesumm).dat held in the Session folder and the Live Folder is complete.   Problem occurs on at 3 different browsers and  2 different devices (ruling out  computer-device or browser dependant caching issue). There was plenty of time between Guide Run 5 and the end of session for the GuideSumm file to have been updated. AstroPlan shows Session.GuideSumm.dat uploads at 21:23 (Initial) , 22:01 (Run 1), 22:13 (Run 2), 23:19 (Run 3), 23:35 (Run 4). Although other files were uploading there were no uploads corresponding to Run 5 (04:13), Run 6 (04:33) & Run 7 (04:45).     Although the Session.GuideSumm.dat file is complete (ie. includes all 7 runs) it is noticed the files last modifed data is 2021-10-10 23:34 .  This would seem to be critical since AstroPlan's webuploader is triggered by changes in a file's modified date, and if modified date hasn't changed the file isn't uploaded.    Can uploader also look at file size as this could be another indicator that page has changed.  GuideSum file is opened with  AutoFlush = True so that changes are also written to disk file.   Problem has been occasionally been seen before.   Fix attempted by closing (guidesumm).dat file  after each image >= 180s exp and after completion of each guide run, in order to force a firm update/modification of the file on disk.

• Dome shutter data outage wasn't reported correctly.  Dome shutter was deemed to be asleep at 00:20:41 (last fresh data was as 00:00:34, ie 20 mins beforehand) raising a yellow session alert. Shutter was deternmined to have been woken up at 00:23:01 producing a green alert.  Outage was reported as 0.0 mins rather 23 mins ? A similar problem occurred in the following S924 session (2021-10-13).  Reviewed 2021-12-20 with decision to close issue as it is believed to have been resolved by modification in AstroMain to search further back in ASCOM log folder history for the current Pulsar log file (which might have opened over 48 hours previously). Previously the search was only made in last 2 days of history.

Small Defects

• Session Local Web Page is missing AllSky Picture for 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko 67.  Investing shows that there is a AllSky.20211011.031409.00526944.an.67PChuryumov-Gerasimenko.jpg file available but it can not be recognised as a match for the target_mod name "67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko".   In replacing the "/" symbol from the name in AstroAllSky's SaveScopeImage() routine it appears that is is replaced with empty string "" instead of  " "

• During attempted playback of Foc2 Focus Profile 4 from session S918 the profile failed to take any focus points and although reported iy 'Fail' result for Best Focus Position,  it reported that profile had 'Passed QC Check'

• When running in Test Mode '_ROT' subfolder and '..rot.FIT' files are not saved in the Session's New folder area but get put in '_Test Files' folder.   Fixed by referencing  'Session.AutoSaveFolder'  when building subfolder path and file names.

Continuous Improvement

• Report file 'Contents' shouldn't be written for general sessions. Hyperlinked Contents table is relevant for Live Sessions (and Test Sessions) but it isn't relevant to General Sessions.

• The Target Info Chart should show a  "Focus Target:     Focusing Cancelled " statement in the event that focusing is cancelled due to insufficient time. Currently  no "Focus Target:" statement is written.

• Support upload and display of live spectra charts on web site.  AstroPlan webuploader modified to support upload of Spectral charts 'Session.SpectralChart0x.png' .  Current/Latest Session and Latest Targets pages and their embedded javascripts modified to support the display of Spectral Charts (.png files)

• Query: What caused the 100% CCD Power Cooling spike at 23:29. A cooling power spike is evident at 23:28-23:29 but it doesn't seem to correspond with a lowering of the CCD Set Point, or any obvious temperature change. Logs and other data sources examined.  Monitor file confirms that Cooling Power jumped from 83% to 100% at around 23:28 and then quickly dropped back down to 90% at 23:30 and then to 80% by 23:32. There is no explainable reason for the increase in cooling power. Conditions were stable and whilst CCD cooling was biouncing around at top of cooling power window, there is nothing to indicate that ccd cooler was struggling to maintain CCD Temperature at set point temperature of -15 degC.  Incident is put down to a random glitch. Following review the item is deemed to be closed.

• When a hold on imaging is required by the Guiding Monitor the actual start position of the image set/image frame should be indicated on the Guiding Chart's History Graph. Should a 20s or 30s delay be occurred this should be reflected by the Guiding Chart which should show the actual Image Frame intervals, with 'gaps' showing where delays are inserted.  Ab attempt to implement this was made in 3.43.4 / 3.43.5 but it doesn't seem to be effective.  Changes made to AstroMain 3.44 but need a live test to confirm

• Get PHD2 version by extracting it from the program's ReadMe file (AstroLaunch).  AstroLaunch is unable to get PHD2 program version from the program's exe file in the same way that it can for many other programs.  Instead of displaying 0.0.0.0 against PHD2 program in AstroLaunch list of programs it should be possible to easily extract the version number from the first line of the program's ReadMe file 'README-PHD2.txt' which looks like 'Welcome to PHD2 Version 2.6.10dev2' .

• Develop a way of getting autofocusing playback to use  a session's '(focus).dat'  files sitting in its original location. Currently a session's ..(focus).dat file has to be copied to the '..\CCD Imaging\Analysis\_Focus'  folder and renamed as 'focus.dat' in order to playback focus runs from a session.  It would be more convenient to be able to simply specify the session number like '918' and have the program automatically find and access the original (focus).dat file. . Makes use of new routines SetHistoricalFocusDataFilePath() and GetSessionFolder() and a new global 'gHistoricalFocusDataFilePath'.

• Add 'points legend' to Focus Profile charts.  FWHM (orange), HFD (cyan) and Max Pixel (lime) points to be shown in the right hand legend area with a note that the Max Pixel points are 'not to the same scale' .

• Develop a way of getting test mode to use raw FIT images sitting in their original location. Currently test mode files have to be copied into Test/Demo folder area before running.   It would be more convenient to be able to have the program automatically find and access the original FITS images, based on supplied starting image number. Makes uses of new global  'gTestModeFilePath'

• Add Button facility to open a session's '(focus).dat' file for review given it's Session No.  This is to provide a convenient shortcut directly to the file rather than searching for the file using Windows Explorer.

• Can the new delay to imaging after significant focuser movements be better optimised.  In AstroMain 3.43.4 / 3.43.5 a 20s hold on imaging is inserted by the Guiding Monitor after any significant change to focuser position (due to filter change and/or temperature change).   Some delay to imaging is appropriate given the 1 to 3 arc sec shifts in Dec position that are frequently seen when making a large focuser change, but is the arbitary figure of 20s the right delay ?  Should the time be dependant on monitoring the Dec position, so if the Dec position of the guide star is close to Lock position the hold is cancelled to allow imaging to continue. In the shortterm the delay has been reduced to 10s pending a more considered solution. Closed after review 2022-02-15 as item done sometime in early Feb 2022.

LX200 - New Dec Motor Unit

In the hope of resolving ongoing issue with poor Dec Guiding performance when operating west of the Meridian a new Dec Motor Unit has been ordered today for the observatory's 12" LX200 Main Scope & Mount.   Supplier: Meade UK / Optic Star (https://www.meadeuk.com/  &  http://www.opticstar.com/).
