Session Aims & Highlights (2023-02-12)

Main aims

1. AstroMain. Test new AstroMain version (3.61.4) following several changes since that version 3.61.2
2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions including comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF)

Highlights

• AstroMain. No significant issues with the new AstroMain Version (3.61.4).
• Dome Slews.  1 slew was slightly affected by a dome holdup (Hold Up Stats: 1/34 slews affected, 3%, 0.7 minutes total hold-up time).
• Targets. 27/33  targets were completed with a further 1 target partially completed.  In addition 2 ToO targets were also acquired (M33 & M51).  M33 was inserted into the night's observation as it wasn't included in the observing plan created at the start of the session although it was defined as a "Tier 1 Must Include" target.

• Shutter didn't initially close when closing the dome at end of session (06:13).  Shutter was reported to have closed but the Shutter Zigbee sensor incated that the shutter was in fact still open. An ObsCam "Check" Image seems to confirm that the shutter was indeed still partially open. This is a known (previously seen) occasional defect in the Observatory's Pulsar Dome.  ObsManager monitoring picked up on the discrepency and initiated actions (partially opening and then reclosing the shutter) that successfully resolved the issue   Shutter confirmed to be closed with Zigbee Shutter Sensor. Communicate the issue to Pulsar Observatories

• New Transient 'M33 w/AT2023bne' wasn't included in night's Observing Plan although defined as a "Tier 1 Must-Include" target (19:22).  New transient in M33 was discovered only 2d before the session and was marked as a Tier 1 Must-Include ahead of the session but wasn't included in the observing plan built for the session.  The target was well placed in the sky for observing and had a C3 constraint that won't have stopped its inclusion in the plan.   Noticing that the target wasn't included in the plan the target was inserted into the night's observations as a ToO target.  At the time the Must-Include table contained 14 'Tier 1' targets and '55 Tier 2' targets.   Target was included in observing plan created during the following session (S1098, 20230213). Issue in session S1097 is put down as being a rare possibility. Issue closed after review but continue to monitor for further issues regarding the inclusion of Tier 1 targets in observing plans.

• Guiding for Target M51 using LX200/ST10 profile failed to start (01:14).  Target 21/37 (M51) submitted as a ToO target was due to use the main scope (LX200/ST10) for guiding and use the secondary scope (TS80/178MC) for imaging. However it was noticed that guiding using PHD2 didn't start as expected.  A user interventation was made to initiate the guiding using the PHD2 program.  After centering the target using the ST-10 camera connected to CCDSoft, and after aborting an attempt to focus the LX200 as focus star was too dim, the SBIG Camera was successfully disconnected from CCDSoft and connected to PHD2 (using the LX200/ST10 profile) and Guide Chart opened (Guide ID 16).  Looping was started,  but then immediately "Stopped after 0.0s" reported with message that Capture of Reference Frame had failed.   Guiding was reported to have started and looping exposure event indicates a guide star had been selected after 1.3s with SNR 64, but at 1.4s an 'Unknown Event' was reported  at 1.4s with message 'LoopingExposureStopped, and a 'Settling Done' message given at 1.5s.  No further events were acknowledged. A message indicated that Reference Picture (Guide16_Ref_10.0s) had been captured and some point after T+21.5s.   Capture of Guide Frame (1) was reported as 'Fail' with the message "Cancelled due to earlier exception taking guide reference".   None of the expected pictures (Cam1_Ref.jpg,  Guide16_Ref.jpg , Guide16_F1.jpg)  were generated. Log file shows that after connecting TS80178MC Profile & equipment at 01:14:29 and after Resetting GuideStats(1) ('Target') at 01:14:32,  the Capture SingleFrame was indicated to have failed with the message "Exception from PHD2 in CaptureGuideImage" with the description "Cannot capture single frame when capture is currently active".  The (Phd2) log file shows the "set_profile [2]" at 01:14:20,  "loop" at 01:14:32.96, "stop_capture" at 01:14:37.08, "capture_single_frame [10000]" at 01:14:37.21 but with error message "cannot capture single frame when capture is currently active".   The capture of a single frame in PHD2 when using SBIG (ST10) Camera is a bit temperamental and the current method although previously tested can evidentally still fail.  A fix has been attempted (2023-02-14) in which the Guider.StartPHD2Guiding() routine has been modified so that Phd2.ClearEventQueue() routine is called to clear the Phd2 event queue when preparing for Reference Frame Capture with SBIG Camera.

• Web Site Performance was poor during early part of session (19:30 to 22:00). Refreshing Current Session Web page was slow, images were slow to display, scripts were slow to finish. Problem present on both IPad and PCs. Problem previously seen and improvements made to pages.  Comet 2023 page was shown to also be slow to display images, demonstrating that problem was not unique to the Current Session page which has several scripts to run during display.  Page displaying normally later in the evening.  Problem seems to have resolved itself.  Closed on 2023-03-02, after monitoring for two weeks.

Small Defects

• The web page element  '<img id="ObsCamImage" etc is flagged as not being unique.  A web page analyser reported this error whilst looking at  page performance.

• Target Circle not showing on Locate Frame 2 and Main Frames for Target AT2023nf. A Target Circle for AT2023nf (CV) is shown on Locate Frame 1 picture ok (pointig error 5.1') but is missing on Locate Frame 2 picture (pointing error 0.0'). Yellow Cam1 FOV is also drawn in an incorrect position on the Cam2 Guide Reference picture. This is a similar issue to seen for one particular target in another session. When that target was later played back the problem couldn't be reproduced.   Issue is a glitch but occurs frequently enough that it represents a real issue. Problem is caused by a glicth in the Insert WCS whereby incorrect coordinates are somehow get used such that when CCDSoft.Image.RaDecToXY () is used  it leads to incorrect / inappropriate XY values.   Solution is to fully move over to using AstroMain's own CalcRaDecToXY() routine. This routine  is used when an Image has been linked ok via a simple link method but fails to Insert a WCS, and therefore can be successfully applied for all cases on the basis that it avoids the occassional issue associated with the CCDSoft.Image.RaDecToXY routine

• Pointing errors after Telescope Slews were up to 9' (19:27). Although telescope pointing was reset at the beginning of the last session, subsequent adjustments to SBIG Camera assembly to rotate camera angle to 180.0 +/0.1 likely moved the position of the camera centre relative to the telescope pointing direction. Issue was not significant as centering operations automically positioned the target correcting in the camera FOV, and slew adjustments were automatically improved during the session, such that by the end of session the pointing errors after slews were down to 2' or 3'.Telescope pointing will be reset at the start of the next session (it was delibrately not done in the S1097 session to allow a new feature 'ConvertMappingImageToJpg' to be finished and tested. Fixed in session S1098.

• Guide Reference images taken with the Secondary Scope are being given the name "Cam2_Ref" instead of "Guide17_Ref".  A Cam2_Ref picture is created and saved correctly with just the basic 10s image + target ellipse.   This 10s image is then further annotated with Guide ROI (white rectange), Guide Star (lime square) and the Cam1 FOV (yellow rectangle). This second picture should be named with a suffix like "Guide17_Ref " (where 17 is the Guide Run ID, however it is also saved with a "Cam2_Ref" suffix.

• Certain targets in the Targets Of Opportunity table aren't being closed out when the target fails (21:11 & 01:10). Two ToO targets (both for M33) are  shown in table as 'Waiting on Weather' or 'In Progress' even though the ToO target has been 'finished' and the job queue moved onto other targets or has finished altogether. Issue has been noted before and the improvements (at at least some of them) haven't provided the required fix.  Fix implemented.  TargetsOfOpportunity(T.ToO_no).Result is set/updated for all "Result" outcome (ie all code sections using ReportSubTitleLite("Result") )

• Hyperlinks on the Targets Of Opportunity table embedded near the end of the session report don't neccessarily go to the relevent report section (06:13).  If there is more than one ToO for the same target object (say M33) , each hyperlink goes to the first M33 report section.  A separate bookmark is created for each report section. The appropriate bookmark needs to be captured for each ToO entry and then used in the hyperlink written when the Targets of Opportunity table is written.   Fix implemented in AstroMain 3.61.6.  ReportLineTitle() routine extended to return BookMark including timestamp as new ByRef parameter FullBookMark.   TargetsOfOpportunity structure extended to include a FullBookMark field. ExecuteQueue() extended to save FullBookMark to TargetsOfOpportunity(T.ToO_no).FullBookMark. ReportTargetsOfOpportunity() routie modified to use in its call to ReportLink().

• Guide Star briefly, but unexpectedly, lost multiple times during guiding for AT 2023vq (22:28) . During Guide Run 8 for Target 9/34 (AT 2023vq) the guide star was being briefly on at least 9 occasions during the run (a lost event every 30 - 120s).  At each event the guide star would be lost for 2-3 guide steps and when it was picked up again it appeared with an RA error that was typically in the order of 4 - 6", but with no particular or significant error in Dec .  The RA error was typically corrected at the next guidestep.   SNR was fairly good (53-54) and consistent throughout the guiding run.  Was cable dragging or something ?.  Is this a bad section on the RA drive gear. Target was located at Az 261.6°,  Alt 43.5°. Hour Angle 57.3°.   Similar issue was noted in session Session 1378 (see Part of Guiding Chart for 3I/ATLAS (2025-11-26 06:16)  )

Continuous Improvement

• Many of the <img> Images on the Current Session Web Page are missing Alt entries.  These obmissions were reported by a web page analyser whilst looking at page performance.

• Look into reducing the number of document.write calls are made in Current Session and Current Weather & Conditions web pages. Reducing document.write might be one way of improving page performance.  Pages are constructed with document.write so that live pictures are specifically not show when developing and editing the respective page in WebExpression web authoring program, avoid accidentally setting image sizes for live images that vary in size and to reference images that are on the web site rather than are shown locally. This has been reviewed and after trying some things out it is deemed to be not feasible to reduce the number of document writes without significantly increasing the difficulty of editing and maintaining the web page. • Convert XMLHttpRequests in web page scripts over to use Fetch API.   XMLHttpRequests is an API that will eventually be removed by at least the Chrome Browser. Fetch API is a new API for loading resources. Look at how script functions DoesUrlExist() and GetUrlFileSize() can use new Fetch API.
