Session Aims & Highlights (2024-12-05)

Main aims

  1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
  2. Dome Slewing. Check dome slewing performance following adjustment to rotation driver tension on 2024-11-28.
  3. Slaved Dome Behaviour.  Confirm previous successful daylight tests that earlier issue involving occasional dome slewing anomalies (when Report Composite Slewing is disabled) have been solved by combination of driver & software updates (MeadeGeneric 1.3.11 and DeviceHub 7.0.3-RC2)

Camera is now looking due North. The red line show the position of the North Keogram Line
A minor tweak may be made rotate the camear slightly to the left in order to avoid view of the house roof on right of image.
Azimuthal field of view is estimated to be 74°. Altitude range is estimated to be 0-40°.

Fig 4.  Ch1 Temperature following relocation from temporary position inside to a permanent position outdoors (2024-12-09)
There are now two outdoor sensors.:
 - The CH1 T/H sensor which is located in a shaded area (but further from the Ekowitt G2000 Gateway)
-  The T/H sensor on the Ecowitt Wittboy (W90) station itself, but may be less reliable in summer as it is in a full sunlight position and less reliable in mid-winter due to proximity to the Sonic Anaenometer Heater (when installed)
The graph shows the drop in temperature at 13:00 as the sensor is more from relatively warmer Observatory where it sat in AllSky/Weather Computing Bay, next to AllSky/Weather Computer and on a shelf above various equipment, such as the Ethernet Switch and various A/C Adapters), to the outdoors position where reading become similar to the W90's Temperature.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for AllSky/Weather Computing Bay

Previous Review
As part of a review looking at increasing the Observatory and Live Session resistance to small power outages the potential of using one or two UPS Systems with offline battery backup was identifed in Feb 2024 (Review - Increasing observatory & session resistance to small power outage, 2024-02-28). The review identified that the Observatory's LX200 Telescope was the observatory element that is most affected by an unscheduled power outage and this led to the selection, purchase and installation of a UPS System for the Observatory Computing Bay. Review - Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the Observatory Telescope, 2024-03-03Eaton 3S 850B UPS - Off Line Uninterruptible Power Supply System, 2024-03-03).

Consideration of a UPS System for the AllSky/Weather Computing bay was initially left a later date, but an incident during the S1197 session (2024-03-13) in which the Pulsar Dome lost its settings and azimuth position during a power outage test has brought forward the need to make a review of a UPS System for the AllSky/Weather Computing cabinet, which sources the power for the Pulsar Dome (Review - Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the Pulsar Dome & Cloud Sensor, 2023-03-15.

Decision
A later anomaly duing the S1274 session (2024-11-22) which saw the communication with both the Cloud Sensor and SBIG camera being lost at precisely the same time and couldn't be recovered with user intervention the next morning, and the introduction of a new Weather Station (Ecowitt Wittboy with G2000 Gateway) and a Tapo C325WB colour camera together prompted a decision on 2024-12-02 to acquire a second UPS system with battery backup for the Observatory to be installed in the AllSky/Weather Computing Bay.

An Eaton 3S 850B - Offline Uninterruptiple Power Supply System will be used. This is the same model at used in the Observatory Computing Bay which has proved reliable and it can leverage some of the software integration that is used by AstroMain for monitoring the UPS and progresively responding to power outage.  This role will most likely be taken on by AstroWeather program running on the AllSky/Weather Computer.

Configuration

The current and proposed power/equipment configurations in the AllSky/Weather Computing Bay (updated from their earlier Mar 2024 versions) are shown the the two diagrams below  :

Image

Image

The use of a small power strip is a necessary component as the space between output sockets on the UPS System are too small for using HUE Smart Plugs and certain A/C Adapters as was found out during the installation of the Eaton 850VA unit in the Observatory Computer Bay, and to provide UPS Battery Backup to 5 primary devices needing protecting (Pulsar Dome, Cloud Sensor, Pegasus USB Hub, Ethernet Switch & Tapo Camera).

USB Hub
The Pegusus USB Hub' connections has been slightly reconfigured with the installation of the UPS System:  the USB cable from the Eaton UPS Hub now replacing the USB cable that came from the USB Hub/Receiver for the old Oregon Scientific Weather/Base Station (the latter has been replaced by a new Ecowitt Weather Station).

Image

Equipment & UPS Battery Management during a Power Supply Outage

This will be defined following installation and based on experience with the use of Eaton UPS system in the Observatory Computer Bay.

Actions

Image Install Eaton UPS system in AllSky/Weather Computing Bay with cables connected as per proposed configuration (see diagram above)
Done 2024-12-07  (Observatory)

Image Install Eaton UPS Software on AllSky/Weather Computer & update settings to those required.
Done 2024-12-07  (AllSky/Weather Computer)

Image Update Power procedues in AstroWeather and AstroMain programs to reflect the addition of a second UPS system and the battery backup it will provide to Pulsar Dome, Cloud Sensor, Tapo C325WB Colour Camera,  Ethernet Switch and Pegasus Hub (and thus also to AllSky Camera, Observatory WebCam, Ecowitt Gateway, & G Drive).
To do.

Image Consider the option of removing the '6 Socket' Power Strip in Observatory Computing Bay.  Whilst installing the new UPS System in the AllSky/Weather Computing Bay it was noted that there is an option to simplify the arrangement by the removal of the 6-socket power strip and the utilisation of existing unused sockets (without battery backup) on the Eaton UPS Box.  The potential future configuration is shown in diagram below

In this configuration the Eaton UPS Box would plug directly into the Main Power Power in the position marked 'AllSky/Weather Cabinet'

Potential issues with this configuration

Advantage of this configuration is likely to be only levered if the Eaton UPS Box can be positioned vertically on the left-hand side of cabinet, otherwise the plugs for the Computer, AllSky Heater and Aux Light are more in the way than current configuration.
- is the space tall enough to accomodate the UPS Box vertically.

Updated UPS / Power Configuration in Observatory Computing Bay

Following the successful installation of new Ecowitt Weather Station, the old Oregon Scientific Weather Station is now effectively redundant and the A/C Adapter for the old base station was removed from the Observatory Computing Bay today (2024-12-07).

The updated diagram showing the revised power/equipment configuration in the Observatory Computing Bay & LX200 Telescope is shown below  :

Potential future Configuration
Based on revised usage of power outlets in the Observatory Computing Bay and a forthcoming plan to add a A/C Adapter for a Heater on the Ecowitt Wittboy (W90) Weather Station providing heating protection for its Haptic Rain Sensor & Sonic Anaeometer in cold/freezing conditions, a potential future configuration is shown below.   This would see the removal of both the 6-socket powerstrip and the small power strip and the utilisation of existing unused sockets (without battery backup) on the Eaton UPS Box, but require the addition of one extra socket between the input cable from Main Power Panel and the Eaton UPS Box.

There is room to add a Smart Plug for the A/C Adapter for the Ecowitt Heater is required.
