Session Aims & Highlights (2025-07-16)

Main aims

  1. UPB V3. Run first live session using new Pegasus Astro UPB V3 box (which has replaced the UPB V1 box that was previously being used). Check for any issues and opportunities for improvement.
  2. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions and the short summer night.
  3. CCD Camera. Test if major CCD Camera issues during recent have been resolved or not

New Focuser - Optec-Lynx TCF-LSI 2"

A new focuser (an Optec-Lynx TCF-LSI 2") has arrived today (2025-07-18) and will replace the Optec 2" TCF-S (that has been in service since Feb 2008)  for controlling focus on the Observatory's 12" LX200GPS/R Telescope.

Image     Image

Background
After a couple of years thinking that about getting a TCF-LSI Focuser it has been finally decided to get one, partly due to a special offer at present time, and a strategy to reduce the number of cables associated with the scope.

Whilst the TCF-S focuser is still working, the LSI Focuser has built-in electronics that elimate the need for a separate handbox, and fits with strategy of reducing the number of proprietary cables and ancillary equipment attached to the telescope.

Currently the TCF-S's bulky handbox has to be strapped to the fork arm on the LX200 where its Serial-USB connector and Power Supply plug into a UPB Powerbox, similarly strapped the fork arm.  Whilst the handbox was originally useful for manually controlling telescope focus, it's button controls effectively became redundant once automated and remote control of the Observatory was introduced in 2017-2018, and all actions are perfomed via ASCOM control.

The LSI model has similar focusing capability as the TCF-S, same distance of travel, same number of focus steps (7000) and shoulld be capably of being quickly integrated into the existing setup & control. It has the same robust 2-inch Crayford-style design for smooth focus, but the updated model is advertised as being faster.
The LSI model also benefits from being able to perform backlash compensation with external control - the older TCF-S model lacked built-in backlash compensation and required backlash compensation to be performed by AstroMain's Focuser1 controller.)

Product Page :  https://optecinc.us/collections/focusers/products/19702

Installation :
Optec FocusLynx Software downloaded (from https://www.optecinc.com/downloads/focusers/ )  and installed on Development Computer (2025-07-18)

This installs 'FocusLynx Commander' (3.3.5) and two ASCOM drivers :  ASCOM.FocusLynx1.Focuser & ASCOM.FocusLynx2.Focuser

AstroMain modifications made (3.76.1)
- add checkbox 'Use Optec LSI Focuser',  (cboxUseFocuser_LSI) and use it for connecting with the appropriate new driver (ASCOM.FocusLynx.Focuser) instead of the driver used for TCF-S (ASCOM.OptecTCF-S.Focuser).

Secondary COM Port set to COM Port used by the new LSI Focuser. (=COM3 on Development Computer )

Backlash
- TCF-LSI can be set-up to use backlash, which means that AstroMain's Focuser1 controller no longer needs to perform this function.
- Backlash compensation needs to be enabled via the FocusLynx Commander program
- AstroMain's Foc1 backlash needs to be disabled (checkbox on the  'Main Scope/Camera/More Focus' tab)

Actions:

Image Modify AstroMain to handle new Optec LSI focuser.   (Done 2025-07-18, AstroMain 3.76.1)
- added new checkbox 'Use TCF LSI Focuser',  (cboxUseTCF_LSI) to indicate that the new LSI focuser is to be used.
- use checkbox state in StartFocuser1() routine for connecting with the appropriate new driver (ASCOM.FocusLynx.Focuser) instead of the driver used for TCF-S (ASCOM.OptecTCF-S.Focuser).
- Modified RestartTcfFocuser()  Implemented in AstroMain 3.76.1. Once installed Secondary Com Port modified to point to the COM Port used by the new LSI focuser.
- Certain routines are named  '..Tcfs..()'.  These names will be retained in the short term and/or renamed as  '..Tcf...()'

Image Setup TCF-LSI on Observatory Computer
- Install OptecFocusLynx Software (3.3.5)
- Temporarily connected TCF-LSI focuser to Observatory Computer. COM Port for new focuser  is COM 12
- Setup TCF-LSI using FocusLynx Commander (see Figure below)
- Set new COM Port (COM12) as TCF Focuser's Primary Port in AstroMain settings (move original COM Port (COM5 for TCF-S) to Secondary Port.

Image Install TCF-LSI on Observatory Telescope
- Remove Camera/Filter Wheel
- Remove TCF-S focuser,  Focus Control Box and Cables
- Attach TCF-LSI focuser (it is assumed that existing adapter on telescope will work with new focuser)
- Connect new cables between TCF-LSI focuser & UPB V3 powerbox
- Reattach Camera/Filter Wheel
- Test connection and operations

Image Finalised AstroMain 3.77
 - set default value of cboxUseTCF_LSI.checked to True

Image Perform NearZenith Focusing & re-orientate Camera.
- perform Near Zenith Focusing
- rotate Camera to 180 deg position
- Resync Telescope Pointing & perform short mapping job

Update 2025-07-28

First live session test using the new TCF-LSI focuser (S1343 2025-07-27) showed that Foc1 Focus Profiles were being collected in the 'Out' Direction instead of the more efficient 'In' Direction.  Sessions prior to S1343 used the TCF-S focuser with AstroMain performing the required backlash compensation movements. Foc1 Focus Profiles were collected in 'In' Direction for efficieny giving profiles that started at say position  3500 and progressively moved to say 2200. Session S1343 saw the first use of the new TCF-LSI focuser which performs its own backlash compensation. AstroMain's own backlash compensation was turned off accordingly ( .UseBacklashComp = False ). During the NearZenith focusing it was noticed that the Wide focus profile ran from  754 to 3994 whilst Standard focus profile ran from 2077 to 3397, i.e.  in oppposite directions to those previously used.

Checking the actual action of the TCF-LSI focuser shows that when moving from  3000 to 4000 it would overshoot (by around 255 steps) and then come back to 4000 position in an 'In' Direction.   To make the focus profile perform efficiently the focus profile has to move in the 'In' direction, i.e. progressively smaller step positions, otherwise the overshoot and reverse is performed for each focus position.  This meant that the Foc1 Focus Profiles captured during S1343 session were sub-optimally captured - taking a fraction longer than necessary (but multiplied by the number of step position in the profile).  Examination of code used in AstroMain 3.77.3 and earlier showed than  a "Out" Focus Direction was specified for use when AstroMain's backlash compensation was turned off (though in practice backlash compensation was always turned turned on during sessions and a 'In' Focus Direction was applied).

This issue was fixed in AstroMain 3.77.4 by changing the code to use the following line in the SetUpFocusProfile () routine :
If .UseBacklashComp = False Then FocusDirection = "In"

Update 2025-07-30

Frames captured during the S1343 (2025-07-29) and S1344 session (2025-07-29) after installation of the new TCF-LSI focuser show different vignetting to frames from earlier sessions that used the TCF-S focuser. The vignetting is present in new images that are flat-field corrected using older flat fields captured when the TCF-S focuser was still installed.  A new set of master flat fields need ro be acquired.
