Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) - Acquire images of comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS), attempt to image the recently annouched split in comet, and new objects C/2025 K1-B & C/2025 K1-C
3. 3I/ATLAS - Acquire images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS (alias C/2025 N1 (ATLAS)
4. AstroMain - Check fixes added to AstroMain 3.78.6 for fixing issue with failed telescope slews and Dome Reconnection after a Dome Restart.

Highlights

• Targets. 3/22 planned targets were completed, with 1 target partially completed.  Other plans targets failed due software issues at start of session and later due to cloud & session suspension. ToO target attempts failed due to software issues at start of session.
• C/2025 K1 (ATLAS). Unable to acquire images due to cloud at the planned observation time. The comet may have been acquire earlier as a ToO target but software issues prevented this
• 3I/ATLAS. Unable to acquire due to cloud during pre-dawn hours
• CCD Camera.   There were multiple issues with CCD Camera at start of session (SBIG Camera missing from Device Manager)
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session

Major Issues

• There were telescope slewing issues at the start of the session, seemingly due to bug in hastely new code in AstroMain 3.78.6 () AstroMain 3.78.6 included code that aimed to workaround an issue that occured twice in the last session, whereby TheSky6 didn't hear a request from AstroMain to slew the telescope to target coordinates or ignored it for some reason. Slew issues of a slightly different kind occurred using the new 3.78.6 version, but  it is not certains that issues where due to the new code or not. The new code was hastely added and may well have contained a bug or a side-effect that wasn't recognised when coding the workaround. AstroMain was modified in-session to take out the new code, and the program released back to the Observatory Computer as AstroMain 3.78.7, where the Program was restarted.  Code used in AstroMain 3.78.6 to be investigated to try to understand why the problem occured. (This was investigated and fixed in AstroMain 3.78.8 - see Minor Issues below).

Minor Issues

• Observatory Computer's 'Start' button stopped working (2025-11-23).  After WinSCP application was uninstalled (may not be related) and the computer was restarted it was noticed that the windows 'Start' buton wasn't working. A  'right-click on Start button brings up legacy menu list ok, whilst the Search button would sometimes work and sometimes not work.  Restarting 'Explorer' and Restarting the Computer didn't fix the problem and using sfc /scannow didn't show any integrity violations.  
   (should there have been integrity violations the following commad would have been used)
     DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  With the help from CoPilot it was eventually determined that 'StartMenuExperienceHost' wasn't running (it didn't appear as a process in Task Manager).  The issue was fixed by running the following in Powershell (as Administrator)

  The start menu then functioned ok, and a further computer restart confirmed that the fix was solid.

• There were multiple issues with CCD Camera during the first part of the session (23:19 - 23:27). After a long stretch of session without CCD Camera issues, there was a series of issues during the first part of the S1376 Session, involving 14 red alerts and CCD Camera restarts between 23:20 and 23:27. Issue started at 23:19:48 with a red 'CCDCamera Frozen' event with the message "CcdCamera appears to be frozen at around 23:19 in section 'GetProperty / FilterIndexZeroBased'.  Red alerts followed with messages "CcdCamera appears to be frozen ..."  or "Image file [0000] hasn't been saved to disk, possible CCDSoft issue" . Attempts to Restart CCDSoft/Camera were generally unsuccessful. The problems delayed operations and preventing the initial NearZenith Foc1 (TCF) Focusing.  No images were attempted between 23:28 and 23:51 (due to telescope slew/software issue).  AstroMain program was restarted at 23:56 after which there were no further CCD Camera issues.  Unclear what was the precise cause of the problem.  A fresh restart of CCDSoft and AstroMain ahead of the session might have prevented the issue.  Issue closed 2025-11-23, as it is likely that no new information will come from detailed investigation. Situation should be monitored over the next few sessions

• Telescope slews to 3 targets failed, telescope didn't move (23:36 - 23:48).  Initial telescope slews to 3 consecutive targets: C/2025 R2 (SWAN) (23:36), BL Lac (23:42) and M31 w/Nova M31 2025-11c? (23:48)  (consecutive targets) failed, with the same issue that 2 targets (C/2025 R2 (SWAN) & BL Lac) failed during the last session (S1375, 2025-11-20). It not clear if there is any connection to targets used (C/2025 R2 and BL Lac) were being attempted on both nights but that is not believed to be significant.  After performing target coordinate & position checks, a call is made to TheSky6.Telescope.SlewToRaDec, and a SlewMonitor begins a loop to watch and record Dome/Slew Paths, but after 8s it gives up as the Telescope Slew hasn't commenced. A 'Check Slew Issue' operation then reports "Possible 'Timed out waiting for received data' problem". Previously it was shown that the slew request is either not heard by TheSky6 or is being ignored - the request certainly doesn't reach TeleLink.   The recent 3 cases were running in AstroMain 3.76.6 which has a trial fix that makes a second slew attempt if the first attempt did lead to an movement of the telescope. For each of the targets a second slew attempt was made and in each case this was successfully made (a separate bug prevented the targets from being centered and imaged).    The call progression for a telescope slew is as following

  Rather than wait for a slew attempt to wait for 8s bfore concluding that a slew call had failed, it is reasonable to assert that a call to Telescope.SlewToRaDec will take less time for a 'ignored' slew call that doesn't leave TheSky6 than a slew call that make its way all the way through to the telescope, and it may be possible to use the call time to determine whether a follow-up attempt can be immediately made.  But to prove this hypothesis and determine an appropriate threshold some tracing code has been added to AstroMain 3.78.8 to measure the call taken to make each call to Telescope.SlewToRaDec(). This showed call time ranging from 0.0 to 239.0 msec for successfully slew cases and indicates that using the call time as a discriminator between successful slew calls and unsuccesful slow calls is unlikely to work.   There were no further incidents of this issue in S1377-S1378 sessions and it is thought that the problem in S1375-1376 session was a due to a temporary performance issue on the Observatory Computer than a computer restart resolved.  Issue closed after review 2025-11-27.

• GotoTarget routine is failing even if a second slew attempt is successful (23:36 - 23:48).   Code was added to GotoTarget() in AstroMain 3.78.6 to make a second call to SlewToTargetRaDec() if the first slew attempt using Telescope.SlewToRaDec failed to move the telescope. The 3.78.6 version was used during the first part of the S1376 session and whilst the second slew attempt was successful in 3 cases where the first attempt failed the Target was still failing with the message "Failed (due to slew)".  With the indication that there was some bug and not yet establishing a proper fix, the second slew attempt was dropped from AstroMain 3.78.7 for use during the second part of the S1376 session.
  Subsequent investigation showed that the reason why the target was still failing was that failure flags from the first slew (in particular T.ObservationStatus = ObservationState.Failure) weren't getting reset ahead of the second attempt, so that the still raised Failure flag would cause the target to fail.   Fixed in AstroMain 3.78.8.  Conditions are also added so that the second slew attempt isn't made if a JobAbort or JobAbortTarget or bHardSuspend flag is raised.

Small Defects

• Check coding associated with Check Connection section in AstroMain's ConnectTheSkyTelescope Routine (23:21). When Connect TheSky6 Telescope is being run, the following line is reported when the Telescope is first connected  from the TheSky6.

  The report line seems wrong by suggesting that the Telescope is already connected.  It is hypothesised that use of "telescope already connected to TheSky6" is mixed up with use of "telescope connected to TheSky6.", but this proved not to be the case.  Investigating further shows that the Telescope is indeed already connected at this point as ConnectTelescopeQuiet() is called after connnecting Telescope ObjScope, to check TheSky/Telescope during the Autostart process. A slight modification is made to the ConnectTheSky6Telescope() in AstroMain 3.78.8 to reduce emphasis on the 'Already' term.

• No ObsCam pictures were recorded from the Session. 'Starting', 'Supsended' & 'Finished' ObsCam pictures were not recorded from the Session.  This was due to user error, where Camera was accidently left on 'USB Camera' (the computer's webcam) instead of the correct camera 'HD USB Camera'  (Observatory WebCam).  The correct camera was selected 2025-11-23.

• When AstroMain's Observatory Services are stopped the fields on the Manager tab aren't been reset to a null / blank states.  Fields on Manager tab need to be reset when the respective Service Thread is exited.

• S1376 Session Span is incorrectly plotted on Battery Health Graphs (2025-11-23 06:44).  Battery Heath Graphs (vwsGraph40, vwsGraph28 and vwsGraph45) produced by AstroWeather Graphs Services shows the time spans of any Observing Session within the 5d range of the chart, based on ObsEnv data sent by AstroMain. On the current set of graphs the span of the S1375 session is plotted correctly but the S1376 session span is unexpectedly plotted as a narrow span (see Fig 1). The start of S1376 session span (23:17) is plotted correctly but the end line should be plotted several hours later than it is drawn (00:00) when the session actually ended at 06:44 (indicated on graph at roughly the point when the dome become parked and battery charging restarted).  Examining the ObsEnv file located on the Observatory Computer, shows the 1376 session between 2025-11-22 23:17 and 2025-11-23 06:44.  but there is a single -10 (General Session flag at 2025-11-22 23:56 which corresponds to when the AstroMain program was restarted and General Session (-10) was briefly re-entered before reinitiating autostart and also corresponds to when the end line was drawn on the graph.  (In a situation like this the user should directly reenter the live session rather than go back into the day's general session).  The ObsEnv file on he AllSky/Weather Computer is similar except that it show two -10 entries at 2025-11-22 23:55 & 23:56.  Problem would seem to be AstroWeather program and on how it determines the end of the Session Time Span.  It should be looking for time of the last 1376 entry and not the next -10 entry. Fixed in AstroWeather 1.29.2, the direction of the loop that looks for the session end is reversed, so that it finds the last record associated with the session, rather than find the first record which is not associated with the session (see Fig 1b).
