Session Aims & Highlights (2025-12-24)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.

Highlights

• Targets. 30/48 planned targets were completed with 3 targets partially completed. Other planned targets failed due slew issues,  displacement by ToO target, or duue to cloud/session suspension.
• Comets. Images of 10 different comets acquired
• CCD Camera.  No issues
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session

Major Issues

• Slews to 6 targets failed, due the TheSky6 Telescope not recieving or not forwarding slew request.  The 6 targets that failed due to slew error during the session were target 14/49 (GSC 1224:29), target 28/50 (AT2025adhw, ToO), targets 30/51 (AT2025adhw, ToO), target 33/49 (AT2022xao), target 36/49 (UGC 4316 w/SN2025advo) & target 39/49 (UGC 5381 w/AT2025ahep). The issue was thought to have started with the submission of ToO target,  but there was one earlier slew failure and later on failures happened randomly amoung normal planned targets.Slew failues were also seem during the previous S1387 Session (2025-12-19). The fact that the issue can sometimes occurs when progressing naturally from one target to the next, shows that issue is not related to a telescope slew, telescope jog or telescope guide being in progress.  The issue is likely due to TheSky6 Telescope not communicating slew requests on to the DeviceHub Telescope / Telescope Driver, but the only activity being undertaken by TheSkyTelescope in between target operations would be a query of telescope's RA/Dec coordinates.  It is suspected that the reason was due to TheSky6 not hearing the slew request or not forwarding it.  What there a reason why TheSky6 was operating slowly ? .  An issue in recent versions of DeviceHub is that program no longer caches recent Telescope values like Ra/Dec coordinates, each Ra/Dec request from TheSky6 has to go all the way to the Telescope driver to obtain the coordinates which can slow down TheSky whilst it awaits values.  It was conjectured that the issue might relate to moments when TheSky6 was waiting for pairs of Ra/Dec values to come through.   Examining the attempted slew to UGC 5381 the slew request being sent to TheSky6 was within the time period that TheSky6 is make a paired RA/Dec call. However in other unsuccessful slew requests this was not the case with undermines the hyopthesis. What ever the reason why the call to Slew Telescope gets lost, logs confirm that no second attempt to slew was being made, by AstroMain which it should do in the current design. Checking code revealed a bug in the OB.GotoTarget() routine that was preventing a second slew attempt from being made. Fixed in AstroMain 3.79.11 so that a second call to SlewToTargetRaDec() routine should now occur.

Minor Issues

• Three red Focuser1 alerts were raised during a short space of time but with no supporting evidence (12:24-12:48).  Whilst red Focuser 1 alerts with message like "Focuser1 (TCF-LSI) not accessible (Last valid data at 12:24:58) " are an ongoing issue, this was first time that 3 such alerts have been raised within less than 30 minutes.  Whilst each one was followed by a green all-clear some 40s later,  there is no supporting evidence for any of these alerts.  There was no Report Message or Log Messages.  There was no TCF-LSI restarts as there would normally be.  There were further 'false' Focuser1 events later in the day. These recording of these alerts are unexplained. How many of the  Focuser1 alerts over the last 6 weeks have been 'false' alerts ?   It is of note that there have been no Focuser1 alerts/events of any kind in the following days (2025-12-26 to 2025-12-29).  Issue closed as unexplained.

• There were multiple green 'all-clear' Focuser1 alerts raised between 13:31 and 16:54 . At 13:21:31 a red Focuser1 alert was raised with the message "Focuser1 (TCF-LSI) not accessible (Last valid data at 13:21:01)". This came after a red 'Program Hung' alert at 13:21:24 with the message "AstroMain UI appears to have stopped responding at 13:21:00 " with was cleared at 13:21:29 with message "AstroMain UI has resumed again after 29s".  The Focuser1 alert itself was successfully fixed and at 13:21:49, by means of a Focuser Restart, with the message "Focuser1 (TCF-LSI) is accessible again. Outage was 48s".  However every 5s after that a further green Focuser1 alert was recorded, reporting an outage value that was calculated back to original outage.  This suggests the flag that indicates there has been a Focuser1 outage wasn't being successfully cleared, and produces a further green all-clear event on the next cycle of the Obs.Manager main loop. The first thought was this might be due to a bug introduced in the code that was relocoated in AstroMain 3.79.9 to fix a earlier problem that wasn't redacting red Focuser1 events. However the code section producing the green 'All-Clear'  has the necessary line that resets the bFocuser1OutageReported flag.  The problem only appeared after the Focuser1 outage at 13:31 and didn't appears after any of the 3 earlier outages. The only explanation is that an exception was occuring before the flag reset, and indeed log messages confirm this e.g.

• The AstroMain's UI appears to have stopped responding for nearly 30s (13:21). A red 'Program Hung' alert was raised at 13:21:24 with the message "AstroMain UI appears to have stopped responding at 13:21:00 " . The UI resumed at 13:21:29 with a green all-clear was issued with the message "AstroMain UI has resumed again after 29s".  The issue appears to be related with subsequently appears of exceptions in ObsMananger main loop in 'check TCF-S focuser' section. First anomaly seems to have been at 13:16:59, 13:18:59 & 13:21:00 when timeouts occurred when attempted to Capture ObsManagerTab. The UI was reported to not be responding and ObsWorker and ObsMonitor were reported to be frozen. It is unclear what had caused the issue or what released the frozen threads.  Issue closed after review as there insufficient information to diagnose the issue further.

Small Defects

• Align Frames on Target routine let through a rogue frame.  The 'Align Frames on Target' routine  (AlignFramesOnTarget () ) analyses a set of frames, image linking each frame, and adjusting the frame so that the specific target (typically a comet) is positioned at the same X/Y coordinates as in the first frame. Previously the routine was modified so that images that don't link correctly are rejected from the alignment process.  When running the routine on the 'C2025_K1_ATLAS 3x3 30s C' image set from S1388 Session, 4/20 frames were rejected leaving 16 adjusted frames, but when these were combined it was evident that there were stars displaying in unexpected position. Reviewing the individual frames showed the 'im1388139' frame was the offending frame. Examining the report & log files suggest the image linked ok with the satisfatory message "Centres match     (WCS center matches that from image link)".  The linked Plate Coordinates (00 58 31.669  +41 31 18.88)   looks sufficiently close to those of the previous and next frames ( 00 58 31.488   +41 31 18.75   &  00 58 31.582    +41 31 18.12 ), but the computed XY coords  ( 506.6 / 264.9 ) are significantly different from the adjacent frames (355.6 / 230.7 & 354.5 / 229.0).   The computed X/Y shifts ( -152 / -27 ) are also significant different from adjacent frames ( -1 / 7   & 0 / 9).    dRa 0.9751222, dDec 41.516.  When the 'Align Frames on Target' was rerun the issue was no longer present.  It is unclear why the issue initially appeared and then disappeared.  Issue closed after review but continue to monitor for any further incidences. A later attempt using Align on Target (Link 8)  found that 19/20 frames would align ok.

• PageBuilder's proposed variable star list is including 'Cloud' / ' Bad Guiding' image sets when it shouldn't be.  PageBuilder's  '< Propose' button routine is design to list the variable stars for which images have been acquired during the session.  The list should not include imagesets for variable stars marked as rejected , eg Cyg_SS 3x3 BVR Cloud. .

• GaiaID is not being correctly sent to PageBuilder Form.  Currently in AstroMain 3.79.10 the Gaia ID field in Page Builder isn't been updated when changing to a new ImageBlock and is only updated when first Image Block is created from ImageBuilder. This means that in cases where GaiaID field was previously set during analysis of a prior ImageSet, the old Gaia ID carries forward and can lead to incorrect information being loaded to the TnsInfo text box.

• AstroMain's add Transient Information is duplicating comments for transients 'discoverd' by Gaia.  Some transients discovered by Gaia have  Gaia's Comment field repeated in TNS's Remarks field. AstroMain PageBuilder routine builds a Information fields that includes both TNS Remarks and Gaia Comments if they exist and are not empty.  This can meet the comment line is unnecessarily duplicated. Currently when this happens the user needs to manually remove the duplicated line (typically the Tns Remarks line is the one that is removed). Fixed in AstroMain 3.79.12.

Continuous Improvement

• Modify handling of Contents table in AstroMain's PageBuilder to remove dependance on ImageSet Number.  In AstroMain 3.79.7- 3.79.10, the Contents table depended on Image Set Number to store contents rows and define the order that Contents are presented.  It is proposed to modify this in order to achieve greater flexibility .

• Modify ImageBuilder to check that an existing ImageBlock isn't about to be overwritten without user confirmation.  Before saving a final jpg image a check should be made to see if an existing ImageBlock isn't about to be overwritten in PageBuilder.  If JPG file name associated with current ImageBlock is non-null and doesn't correspond to the JPG file that is is about to be saved, a user confirmation is required to ensure that ImageBlock isn't accidentally overwritten.

• Extend AstroMain's PageBuilder to export / import an 'Earlier' ImageBlock.  In order to quickly employ an Earlier Image in a Target WebSection it is proposed to extend the Image Tab, with the addition of two new buttons ">> Export As Earlier Image Block" and "<< Import Earlier Image Block" and routines to write current image block to an xml file in a 'Xml' subfolder in the current Target's Store Folder, and import it again during a future session.
