- Auroral activity on the night of 2024-08-27 / 2024-08-28 that was associated with Kp 5.5 / KP 6 (G1/G2) geomagnetic conditions.caused by the arrival of a CME on 2024-08-27.
Skies in NE Scotland were clear and saw most of the auroral display. Activity was visible from the Clair Observatory (+57N) from 2024-08-27 21:30 to 02:50 UT (22:30 to 03:50 LT)
Observed activity comprised an auroral arc up to 15° altitude, moving curtains and rays up to 35-40°.;
Scandinavia magnetometers indicate show activity in magnetometers readings from 21:00 to 04:00 UT
SpaceWeather.com reported that
"a seemingly feeble CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Aug 27th. At first, nothing happened. Then, on Aug 28th, Earth encountered the CME's tail and a G2-class storm erupted.
The storm and light show occured more than 10 hours after the CME arrived. At the time, Earth was deep inside the CME's tail--a magnetized structure trailing the CME itself. Magnetic fields within the tail unexpectedly connected to our planet's magnetosphere. The storm commenced and auroras were sighted across Europe and the USA as far south as latitude +41N"
