Fireball on night  2022-09-14

Fireball     Notes
Bullet Pictures

A bright fireball due to the passage of a meteor through the earth's atmosphere occurred in the evening of 2022-09-14 passing rougly SSE to NNW across North Wales and Northern Ireland.

The event has been documented by the UK Meteor Network
 https://twitter.com/UKMeteorNetwork/status/1570461868019392512

Whilst it was initially though to represent rentry of spacecrafet/rocket debris, later analysis indicated that it was caused by a meteor.

Despite somewhat cloudy conditions the fireball event was detected in two AllSky Cameras in Aberdeenshire (NE Scotland) lying in SW-WSW sky at an altitude angle of 6-7 degrees and at a distance of some 330 km.

Whilst the two images overlap in time from 20:59:51 to 20:59:55 (5s window), from the difference in the percieved azimuthal direction of the detected event in the two cameras it is likely that the image taken by Neal Weston (20:59:15 to 20:59:55 UT) captures an earlier part of the fireball's path in SW sky with the latter part of path likely hidden by trees.

whilst the image taken by David Richards (20:59:51 to 21:00:21) captures a later part of the fireball's path in WSE sky with the earlier part of the path likely hidden by clouds.

At the time of second image when the fireball was percieved to be in the SSW sky it is estimated that the fireball would have been lying at a distance of 330km and at a position some 100 km NNW for the N.Ireland coastline.

Based on the measured altitude angle of 6 deg, it is estimated that the meteor/fireball was lying at a height of 42.5km above the earth's surface at this time. It is likely that the fireball would probably have been lying at altitude of 70km when it first appeared in skies over North Wales..
