Objects Session Notes
M40 - Double Star NGC 4290 - Spiral Galaxy Hubble Deep Field (HDF) - North MCG-1-39-3 - Spiral Galaxy, with Supernova 2005cf M5 - Globular Cluster
- Night skies in Aberdeenshire, Scotland don't become astronomically dark in mid summer even at local midnight. However in a further attempt to see what still can be seen in June skies, and dispel the local 'wisdom' about not bothering to observe in May-June-July, a 1h 25m observing session was held around local midnight. - Imaging with CCD Camera showed that despite the twilight conditions it was still possible to record down to +17 Mag. - Highlights of the session were images of a recently discovered Supernova 2005cf and a colour image of the M5 globular cluster - Seeing quality was generally good with FWHM values down to 4 arc secs. - More Notes

Hubble Deep Field (Ursa
Major) In December 1995 the Hubble Space Telescope assembled an image of a small 2x2' region in Ursa Major over the course of 10 consecutive days. Known as the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), it was was the deepest ever field taken at that time and showed tens of thousands of galaxies out to a distance of 13 billion light years. In a rather ambitious attempt, I tried to image the same area under less than ideal sky conditions (ie Scottish summer twilight skies). Although the image from the 16 minute (total) exposure reached to mag +17 none of the faint galaxies in the HST image are visible. |
