Dwarf Planet (136199) Eris Observation of Eris on 2009-09-20, lying in starfield in Cetus Faint object marked by cross-hairs lies at the forecast position of Eris on 2009-09-20 has approximately the correct magnitude (+18.3 measured vs. +18.7 predicted) and is not present on a DSS Reference Image, or on image taken 18 days later. Eris is the largest known object in the Kuiper Belt with estimated diameter of 2,500 km (it was previously known at 2003 UB313) The bright star in the image is HIP 7802 (mag +8.8) |

DSS Reference Image Reference image for same area doesn't show any object at the precise location of suspect dwarf planet Eris. There are two nearby very faint objects but these are sufficiently far away and are just about recognised in my images on 2009-09-20. MPL 2003 UB313 earlier observation attempt taken 2 nights before (2009-09-18) Note : absence of any object the position of the later suspected object. |
||
Expected position of Eris on 2009-09-18 is indicated by
the black circle. With predicted magnitude of 18.7, Eris is probably too faint to seen in this image (mag limit +18), and in any case would also almost certainly be lost in the glare from the adjacent mag +8.8 star. Note : the absence of any star object at the position of suspected object two days later. However this is not definitive evidence since the magnitude limit of the image is not quite sufficiently deep. It can be seen that there are a number of other objects (star/faint galaxies) which can be seen in the 2009-09-20 image but not in the earlier 2009-09-18 image. |
