Main aims of this nighttime session was to continue commissioning of Clair3 Observatory including
1) Perform live test of Observatory System operating in Fully Automated Mode
(This follows corrections and modifications to code since previous live test sessions on 018-07-18 and 2018-07-22. Although operating in Fully Automated Mode the session was again closely monitored to understand any issues and intervene if required)
2) Acquire some images
3) Continue checking stability of
POTH.Hub (Telescope + Dome) & Observatory Control Software
Equipment & Software
- 12" LX200 and ST-10XME
- CCDApp2,
TheSky6, CCDSoft 5, POTH Hub,
Highlights :
- The new Fully-Automated Operation Routines
generally worked as designed
but again a few further few things were noticed that will require further
correction and improvement. The test can be judged a
success (see test notes)
- Specific successful achivements of
the automated system :
- a new session
(session ID, session name, session folders) was created for the night
- an optimised Observing Plan/Schedule was created for the night from a database
of targets and loaded ready for observing
- Dome,
Telescope and CCD Camera were connected to
- Temperature
Set Point on CCD Camera was set (based on ambient temperture)
- Dome,
Telescope and CCD Camera were operated
- Weather
and Cloud Sensor data was used to open and close the Dome Shutter several times
during the session
- Execution of Observing Plan / Target Queue proceeded according to scheduled
start times.
- Close down of the Observatory (Telescope &
Dome Parking, CCD Disconnection)
- Post Session
Housekeeping (File copying etc)
(Wait to Next Night and
Commence Next Session were not tested on this occassion)
- No specific failures of the automated
system, however efficiency was rather poor due to shutter closures due to
borderline cloud conditions and skipped targets due to previous targets overrun
their respective time slot.
- A long list of
corrections/minor improvements to the routines were identified. Major
items that needed to be attended to are:
- Stop target
imaging before each target overruns its time slot
- Tidy
up and rationalise routines dealing with Session Closing and Session
Housekeeping
- Autofocussing (previously noted)
- Access (and Use) Centering Offsets held in Targets Database
- Images of several targets were obtained
- A bug within new
Target/Job Queue routines meant that Mosaic (M11) could not be acquired.
- There were with no major issues with the Observatory System itself, except for an outage of the Cloud Detector
Executed Observing Plan (2018-07-24) (Targets marked with Red Status failed. Initial targets failed due to missing the scheduled start time. Later targets failed due to cloud/closed dome. |

Issues arising during the session:
Observatory Software Issues |
Shutter repeatedly Closing & Opening within Short Interval (02:04 to 02:16 Local) |
|
'Bad' Clarity Values causing momentary 'Must Close' Flags Unexplained spikes in Clarity between 02:04 and 02:16 LT. The Scorecard Routine interprets these as Critical Cloud and as a consequence Shutter Safety is momentarily set to 'Must Close'. |
Back to Top
With key hardware powered up (Observatory Laptop, Dome, Telescope and CCD Camera), key software running (TheSky6, CCDSoft5 and CCDApp2) and key observatory services started (Observatory Manager, Weather/Cloud Sensor, ASCOM Dome, ASCOM Scope), and the Telescope Focussed & Synced on a known startfield, the observatory manager control was placed into 'Fully-Automated' Mode (see screenshot). This initiated the Fully-Automated cycle of operation, comprising the following session states : Pending, Initiating, Starting, Equilibrating, Running (or Suspended), Closing, Housekeeping, Finished, Back to Pending.
The Session began in the 'Pending' State, but as the Sun had already set (Sun Altitude < 0) the Session immediately moved to 'Initiating' where the routine picked up a previously created (Quick-Plan) observing plan for the night with a scheduled start time equivalent to a sun altitude of -9 deg. Once created the observing plan was successfully loaded into the Target/Job Queue ready for execution. (Note: execution commenced after midnight and therefore the local time dates shown (2018-07-25) appear to differ from the night date (2018-07-24), but this is normal/okay)
The Session then moved to 'Starting' where CCD Camera and Telescope were successfully connected (a CCD Temperature Set Point of -10 degC was selected and used. Session setup was successfully performed (new Session ID, Session Name and Session Folders).

It was quickly apparent that the Observatory Manager was using a non-optimised Quick Test plan. The Observatory was switched to Manual Mode and the Job Queue aborted. (The Observatory manager had loaded an existing test plan for the night (a non-optimsed plan (nPopulation 1, nGeneration 1) created as part of daytime testing) and had passed over the expected step of creating and using a properly optimised plan for the night that would be created with optimisations parameters (nPopulation 200, nGeneration 40) )

A V2 Plan was then 'manually' created in the 'Observing Database Tool ' (SqlForms2/Schedule Builder) using full optimisation parameters.
Observatory control was then put back into 'Fully-Automated' Mode and the Session quickly moved through the initial states, loading the new V2 plan and re-performing a 5 minute equilibration period.

This was a late night test and since the scheduled start times for the first 16 targets had already been passed, they were skipped and flagged as 'Failed / MissedStart' [ It may be better to flag these targets as 'Failed / BeforeSession' to distinguish them from targets that fail due to the prior target overrunning its time slot ]

The 17th to 19th targets (NGC 7086, Z And & RX And) were executed
successfully . The 20th Target (M11 Mosaic) failed (it seems that the Mosaic
Coordinates filename was not retrieved from QL database or otherwise
couldn't be found). Execution then moved on to the 21st target
(NGC 6772) but due to the failure of the previous target, it required an 18
minute wait until the it's scheduled start time arrived. During this period the
Session was suspended (shutter closed) and resumed (shutter opened) 3 or 4
times
[ probably need a smarter way for managing open/close shutter when
cloud conditions are borderline ].

This target took a long time to center - image linking slow due image containing a large number of star objects (can SExtractor parameters be better optimised ?) and the target overran its time slot by some 8 minutes. The 26th target was skipped due to missing its start time and execution moved to the 27th Target (NGC 100). The 28th target missed its start time by less than one minute), leaving the 29th and final target (NGC 309) to have to wait nearly 12 minutes for its scheduled start time to arrive. During this time conditions deteriorated and the shutter was shut. Locate images were eventually taken but looked so bad that it was decided to abort the target.
