Session Aims & Highlights (2021-02-01)

Main aims

1. Software. Test features and fixes added in AstroMain 3.35.9
2. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets and deep sky targets as allowed by conditions.
3. Andromeda's Parachute. Acquire images of the gravitionally lensed (quad) quasar known as Andromeda's Parachute.

• Bottom and right hand side of focus box are not drawn when box has to be shifted where target is too close to bottom and/or right side of picture.  Change x/y position of box by -1 as appropriate.

• GuideSummaryCharts on Local Files Htm Page are in the incorrect order and should be swapped.  RA RMS & Dec RMS chart to appear first .

• Zenith FWHM chart was missing grid lines and time label associated with graph extension at 23:30. This is assumed to be due to the graphics object was being used by another process at the precise time that extension was being attempted. Log file shows Exception in ZenithFwhmChart.ExtendGraph at 23:01:10.56 (Object is currently in use elsewhere).  A fix is required whereby a second attempt is made to make the extension if the first attempt fails. This was implemented by referencing bLastExtendFailed variable when testing condition to ExtendChart or not.

• Final Locate Frame for NGC 4145 showed pointing error of 1.77".  Modify code so pointing error of > 1" is resubmitted for extra cycle of jog correction / and new final locate frame.

• Analyse Guide Run 11 (M31) as it appears to shows uniform guide anomalies every 5 mins.   This is part of tracking down the cause of a Guiding Issue that most frequently affects target observations lying west of Meridian.  Guide run analysed and plot added to Investigation - Guiding Issues (West of Meridian).

• Scope Slewing Graph had a straight line path for the slew to NGC 4145, cutting across the high Dec exclusion zone.  Slew paths should have been a curved path. Examiming log file recorded that scope had moved 0.007 deg after 0.9s, but then didn't record any other movements until the slew was completed 66.8s after slew initiation..  Typically no scope movements are detected until some 3.2 - 4.4s after the slew is initiated.  Did the earlier data break some logic in slew monitoiing algorithum ?  Logging of Scope movements and update of Scope Path is stopped when bScopeCompleted = True.   Two conditions can cause bScopeCompleted to be set to true
  a)  bScopeSlewStarted And Me(i.e. objScope).Slewing = False

  It is presumed that due to a specific condition.  Obj.Slewing was set to True by Driver when Slew was initiated, then changed to False when read from the Scope a short moment later and then changed back to true (but only after condition a). set the bScopeCompleted to true)   Fixed attempted by only allowing bScopeCompleted=True being set 3 seconds after the call to Slew the scope.   (This 3s condition was increased to 5s in AstroMain 3.38.2 (2021-03-10) after a similar issue was encountered in S867 (2021-03005) for a Slew to Target UGC 3502.

• Small 2x2 Main Image Pictures had target circle drawn at an incorrect position. Small 2x2 JPG pictures for Target 5/49 (Andromeda's Parachute) has target circle drawn in bottom right of picture instead of expected position near center of picture. Problem only affected smaller '382' pictures, the circle was drawn correctly on larger '500' pictures.  Believed to be fixed. Test playing back FIT files from the target was successful.

• WCS position inserted into FITS Header does always match that expected.  After running Image Link using InsertWCS method and successfully getting BestRa2000, BestDec2000 position by calling TheSky.GetObjectRaDec2000("Image Link Information") it was found during desktop tests that subsequent use of Image.XYToRADec()  and  Image.RADecToXY() would sometimes give incorrect results, and this would lead to objects being drawn in incorrect position in JPG pictures.  This is due to the WCS Center (CRVAL1, CRVAL2) not matching the BestRa2000, BestDec2000 coordinates in some cases.   Some FITS file would produce different CRVAL1, CRVAL2 results in different.  This issue might be the cause of some JPG drawing anomalies noted from live sessions. Fixed by new routine ( ValidateWcsCenter() that compares WCS Center with Center determined by Image Link and resets the WCS Center if there is a discrepency.

• Realtime tracking of CCD Cooling Power needs to develop a 5 min moving average and use this for deciding to change CCD Temperature Setpoint.  At present the cooling power can be below the lower threashold for a long time, waiting for a target to finish, and then be prevented from making a setpoint change due to one single value above the threshold. A proposal to change this was made sometime ago but hasn't been implemented yet.

• JPG picture for distant galaxy Target NGC 4145 was given a 0.5' radius circle but the galaxy has a significant larger size than this. NGC 4145 is too large to be a distant galaxy (issue determining a location for NGC 4145A) .  Issue resolved(target should be NGC 4145A (SkyName = UGC 7175)

• Issue saving JPG pictures when replaying target HIP 87937 images from earlier session. JPG Files being saved with control character (-á) that prevents the picture from being opened correctly.  Issue was due to 'HIP 87937' string being copied from .html log file in MS Edge and the control character (an ASCII 160 (non-breaking space) ) was unintentionally used in Target Name. Hard to spot/prevent this occuring.   Fixed using S = S.Replace(Chr(160), "_"), but should probably be done when accessing the input string , to prevent bad characters getting into system / into database.

• Running Obs Single/Mosaic in UseTestMode sometimes locks up the program's UI  until the Task is completed. Unclear why this happens as the task is run as a thread. Lock up doesn't always occur. Fixed in AstroMain 3.38 following major re-factoring to provide greater isolation of the UI Thread from the business code.  Deemed fixed by tests during the final part of session S867 (2021-03-05).

• Problem with Guide Request / Guiding on some targets . Some targets (23/50: AT 2021bhf, 25/50: GCVS AM Her, ) didn't produce Guiding Reference or Guide Frame pictures.  Investigating showed that both these targets didn't have completed Guide Charts (although both had been create/started). AT 2021bhf showed normal Guide Reporting, but doesn't produce a Settling Done/Guiding Will Continue line and execution doesn't reach the point where Guide Reference picture is made or Guide Frame is captured.   Guiding evidently happens with guide stats produced for each Frame, however final guide stats line was identical to the proceeding target (22/50:  GCVS U Gem).  GCVS AM didn't show any of the normal Start Guiding lines and failed to produce any guide stats for each image, but showed final guide stats line  'Guide Stats  rms error    1.3"      1.0" / 0.8", N: 97, SNR: 264.6, HFD: 4.89, Guide: 99%, Lost: 1%' that was identical to the proceeding target (24/50:  AT2021rl). Log message don't show that PHD2 Guide Monitor starting. ( the 'Starting PHD2 Guide Monitor' line was missing for both targets.  Guide Reference FIT file was captured ok for both targets.   Issue investigated (see Investigation - Incorrect Reporting of Guiding Results).      Eventually fixed 2021-03-30.

A new variable 'ImageJsQueueNo'  keeps track of the position of "Session.Images.js" in queue list and is used to directly upload the .js file whenever a new Image frame or target frame is uploaded to the web.   Previously the .js file was updated too soon or too late.

• Add dialogs to Image Analysis tasks to step the user through image processing/analysis more seaminglessly.  For example from after clicking align Images , user would need to just keep pressing ok to having the image aligned, combined, saved, image linked in TheSky, and opened in FV. • Stop CCDSoft's CCD Camera dialog from automatically appearing when starting 'Image Analysis'.  This is help prevent the issues that the dialog stops SendKeys  from performing the intended Image Align / Image Combine Tasks and potentially corrupts Camera settings.  Fixed by disabling the call to SetAutoSaveFolder() routine when emConsoleMode is emMode_Analysis.   (since calling SetAutoSaveFolder() inherently leads to Camera Dialog being shown).

  Scope2OffsetN and Scope2OffSetW are defined as the offsets of Scope2/Cam2 FOV centre (TS80/178MC) relative to Scope1/Cam1 FOV center (LX200/ST10).  The SU.Scope2offsets and txtScope2Offset fields are automatically upated when Cam2 images are linked.  If UseScope2Offsets checkbox is checked and ShCap Imaging is being used (ie TS80/178MC Main Images) then -ve Scope2Offset are used to position Scope1/Cam1 at the correct position to ensure target is centered in Scope2/Cam2 view.

• In situation where InsertWCS fails but FailSafeLink works, create new code to calculate a XY location from RaDec by using CentreRaDec from FailSafe Link and ImageScale & Rotation from current or previous Locate. This is to allow Targets to still be drawn on JPG picture.   New routine 'CalcRaDecToXY()' created to calculate XY cordinates from RaDec coordinates without needing an inserted WCS.   CalculatePointingError() routine revised so that it calls CalcRaDecToXY() instead of Image.RaDecToXY() when image doesn't have WCS. New variable bHasWCS used to flag whether current image has WCS or not

• Ensure that when a file path on website can't be found it leads to the prescribed 404.html page. The prescribed page isn't been accessed at present.   Solved:  The .htaccess file in web root directory (edited via JustHost new cpanel filemanager) needs to include the line     'ErrorDocument 404 /404.html' ,   where 404 is error code and 404.html is my page for handling the error.
