Session Aims & Highlights (2021-09-06)

Main aims

1. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
2. AstroMain. Test fixes, improvements and new features in AstroMain 3.41.5. Check for stability.

Highlights

• Spectra Focusing. New automated routines for taking a focus profile using SA200 (S) filter with FWHM measurement on a specific part of the 1st order spectra instead of zero order star worked well.
• Secondary Scope. Center of Camera2 (178MC) view through TS80 secondary scope aligned with the Camera1 (ST10) view through LX200 main scope using Orion X-Y Finder. This was performed whilst watching live view with Camera2 in SharpCap. Misalignment was reduced from  9.6 arc mins [N: 9.6', W: 0.5' ] to new value of 0.9' [N: -0.21', W: 0.83'].  Software bugs preventing former measurement of the alignment error and rotation.  Camera2 alignment still needs to be changed to make the long axis of Camera2 view to be parallel to long axis of Camera1 view, at the moment it is Camera 2 rotation is ... ?
•  Gremllins.  Several problems at start of session which delayed the start of observing by around two hour.

• Observatory Shutter could not be kept open due to low Clarity values (23-24) despite clear skies and reasonable AllSky Count (30-44).  Obs.Manager intervening to close shutter each time Clarty values drop below 24. Issue fixed in session by quicking creating and AstroMain build (3.41.7) in which a Clarity Trim Option can be enabled to artifically raise incoming Clarity values by a user defined value (4.0 in this session). So that a Clarity value of 23 becomes an acceptable value of 27 allowing the dome to be opened and not shut.    CloudSensor  relay should still intervene if clarity values did become too low.   Obs Manager will still intervene in event of rain, really low clarity or AllSky Star count below 22. Problem lost some 30-45 minutes of observing time. Problem seems to be due to exception mild conditions.
   Fixed in session. (AstroMain 3.41.7, Session)
   
• AstroMain crashed twice when trying to PlateSolve an image captured from TS80/178MC using SharpCap. (23:51).  Whilst running MeasureGuidescopeOffsets() routine after first taking Main Scope Locate Frame, GetGuideScopeCoords is called. A Secondary Scope Locate Frame is taken. This is imaged ok and is loaded into CCDSoft ok.  Whilst attempting to run the 'Determine Guidescope Offsets' button routine the AstroMain program crashed with fatal exception. Problem occurs due to 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException ' Error: command failed, Error code 206' exception in the line 'SetImageScale(Image.FitsKeyword("CCDXBIN")'  in PlateSolveImage() routine. The issue was repeatable. Problem appears to be due to the routine trying to access a non-existent Keyword from  Images FITS header.  he line is not placed with a Try.. Catch.. End Try  block.   Code was meant to insert CCDXBN but thi shasn't worked or hasn't be executed in this case.   Observatory software had to be restarted.  Although care was taken a problem then occurred that led to LX200 loosing its Park status.  and didn't restart. Problem lost some 30 minutes of observing time.  After documenting the exception using Screen Capture, the Observatory Software was restarted and the plan to adjust the realign the Guidescope onto the same axis as the main telescope tube.   Fixed by adding a Try..  Catch..  SetImageScale(1)   End Try block around the current  'SetImageScale(Image.FitsKeyword("CCDXBIN")'  line.   The GetGuideScopeCoords() routine automatically inserts "XBINNING" and "YBINNING" keywords into FitsHeader. Code extended so that it also writes 'CCDXBIN' and 'CCDYBIN' (even though image is a CMOS image and not a CCD Image) .   Problem has probably been introduced by switch over to use PlateSolveImage.   There would seem to be a potential issue whereby PlateSolveImage sets Image.ScaleInArcsecondsPerPixel based on Binning and scale using Cam1 plate scale (1x1). As a quick fix code changed so that will instead using a PlateScale passed to the routine (from LinkImageCam2).  Calls from Camera 1 linking pass vcNull and the existing method of assigning dImageScale and  Image.ScaleInArcsecondsPerPixel is used

• Telescope lost its Park Position and instead of starting up from Az 180/Alt 3 deg it started  up at Dec 0/Due South (Meridian) position and moved 15 deg west during its initialisation. Scope has to be moved to rough know position (Dec 0/Due South) and 'Check/Reset Telescope Pointing' button routine ran to find scope position using ASTAP, before Syncing scope and running a short mapping run.  This caused the lost of 30 minutes of observing time.
   Fixed in session  (Session, Observatory)
   
• Stars found to be completely missing from TheSky6's Virtual Display at start of session. Stars missing or otherwise turned off and couldn't be turned back on.  Tried various things to turn on stars but nothing worked. This is the first time that this problem has been noted. In the end the session was closed down and Observatory Software restarted.  After restarting TheSky6 it was found that Virtual Sky view as complete ok and stars visible as expected. The session was resumed. The issue caused the loss of around 30 minutes of observing time.
   Resolved in session  2021-09-07 (Session, TheSky6)

Minor Issues

• JPG Pictures files are being titled 'Test Only'  and the JPG files are being named ..Test_Only...jpg. Problem appeared present earlier in day when running AstroMain 3.41.6 in test mode on development computer. Problem didn't occur in previous session S910, 2021-08-31. Code shows that 'LocateInfo.TargetDisplayName = "Test Only"  is hard-coded into the ConvertFitsToJpg() routine just below lines added earlier today (2021-09-06) for getting the X/Y origins Subframe. XORGSUBF & YORGSUBF.  Code examined and found to be due to a 'test line' that had accidently been added & not deactivated prior to release of AstroMain 3.41.6 build to the Observatory Computer
   Fixed in-session 2021-09-07 (AstroMain 3.41.7)
   
• Problem with Focus Boxes being mislabelled as 'spectra focus' for certain images from Session.  Focus Plot (C Filter) for M33 w/EGN shows a blue square box over the star labelled ('star) and a blue rectangular box (labelled 'spectra focus) sitting to vertically above the star .  Focus Plot for UGC 2605 w/SN shows a green square box  over star (labelled 'star') and a larger square green box centered over star (labelled 'spectra focus'). This is a teething issue for new code that was added in previous 24-48 hrs.  Small square box over star, labelled 'star' and 'spectra focus' label is drawn over main box when bDrawStarBox=True, this is set to True when  (BoxCoords.x2 - .BoxCoords.x1) <> (BoxCoords.y2 - BoxCoords.y1) . This is meant to happen when BoxCoords are non-square.Do we need to apply a Math.Abs function (to ensure that absolute lengths are  is used) ?.  Could add an extra parameter to BoxCoords that can be passed to signify a spectra focus box. Fixed by using a new  BoxCoords.bSpectraBox  parameter to control the Focus Box drawing & labelling.

• Problem with Focus Boxes being drawn in an offset (spectra box like) position rather than being drawn as box over a star. Problem seems to be that Filter was left as 'S' on the Scope 1/TCF-S focusing tab and when PerformAutoFocusRun() is called by Job Executor to focus a target star, it calls SetFocusingMode() which sets gUseSpectraFocusing = True because filter is seemingly on 'S'.  Issue fixed by making PerformAutoFocusRun to only call SetFocusingMode() when the call mode is 'Manual', otherwise is sets  gUseSpectraFocusing = False which ensures the correct focus box is defined.

• Focuser Position not being moved to expected position when taking S Filter images. Issue due to AutoSetFocusPosition() routine still using focus offet from SU.FocusOffset() array when using S Filter. When UseSpectralFocusing is enabled, the Focus Offset needs to be taken from VM.SpectraFocusOffset.  Worked around in-session by editing Program settings to set S Filtet Offset to the value of the Spectra Focus Offset.  Code to use the correct offset fixed in AstroMain 3.41.8

• 'Process All' failed to reduce (pre-process) images from the last Raw Image datasets.   Process All failed to reduce images from final sets of raw folders even though it appeared to have succeeded.  It appeared to start at a point where CCDSoft complained that files were going to be overwritten and was waiting for user intervention.  This happened whilst processing the '-5c 1x1 30s S'  folder. Problem may have been occurred because there was one immediately preceeding raw folder (25c ... ) that was skipped as there were no master darks for that temperature.  Unable to replicate problem in small test involving 4 raw folder groups including '-5c 1x1 30s S' .

• The Latest Session Webpage (from S911) is showing anTargetInfo picture (WDS GRB 34 (21/21)) that is associated with the last session (S910). Problem is probably a result of AstroPlan not completing uploading of blank files due the needing to restart Observatory Software after AstroMain crash. Issue considered to be understood and can be closed. But monitor for future occurances.

• Y Axis labels on Foc Temp Chart, Cam2TempChart & CCDTempChart is overwritten. Problem probably relates AstroMain crashing and several restarts.  Issue considered to be understood and can be closed. But monitor for future occurances.

• Collection of AllSky Meas for Near Zenith Focus Field still times-out waiting for information from AllSky Computer (00:07).   Fix attempted in AstroMain 3.41.4, 3.41.5 & 3.41.7 hasn't worked.  Extra Trace message added to AstroMain 3.41.6 but unfortunately hadn't been turned on (cboxTraceCloudInformation checkbox on More/Backdoor Tab) to help understand this issue.  Collection/reporting of Sky Meas for Guided frames, framesets (GuideSumm.dat) is also not  working.  Feature added in 3.41.5 but is still not working.   Tracing turned on at c. 00:40 . (approx) and turned off at 01:38.  (Note: Earlier parallel issue with SkyMeas values not appearing in GuideSumm file was found to be a bug in GetGuideStats() and was fixed 2021-09-17 (AstroMain 3.42.2). Review (2022-05-16) indicates that issue hasn't not been resolved despite multiple atttempts in 2021.  Issue closed 2022-06-03 as the issue can't be readily fixed and it has been decided to remove the reporting of AllSky Measurement from Near Zenith Focusing in order to avoid waiting for a 30s time-out.

• Whilst checking the Telescope connection , a message posted to Current.Frame that is intended to saving the Date Prompts have been successfully passed is unfortunately truncated. Message to be shortened to say 'Date Prompts have been passed ok' .

• Modify the Current.Object message posted during short mapping job to indicate the number of points being executed .'e.g.  'Map Point 8/12'. Although information is written to session's Report file, it would be handy for it to say 'MapPoint 8/12' rather than just 'MapPoint 8'.

• Multiple adhoc 'Single Object' imaging runs for star HD 224721 were taken in short succession. 'Manual' target was imaged several times in short succession whilst testing Spectra Imaging vs exposure time . Each one has a label on the Session Results chart, which is plotted as an extended label (ie a label which is plotted as an extension when it can't block within target/observation target.  In this particular case the various labels for HD 224721 gets overposted with each other. Labels shouldn't be drawn if they are closer than 12 pixels from the last such label.  Issue fixed in AstroPlan 1.22.8, but there is risk that extended name labels overpost with event labels.
