Session Aims & Highlights (2021-09-27)

Main aims

1. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
2. AstroMain. Test fixes, improvements and new features in AstroMain 3.42.7.

Highlights

• Targets.  Images from a total of x targets were acquired through the session.   Sky clear, but moon light and only moderate seeing
•  AstroMain.  AstroMain observatory control worked well and their were software or hardware glitches at all. 100% operational success.
•  Seeing  Seeing wasonly moderate and sometimes rather poor

• Pointing Errors from Vega (Brightest Star Locate) aren't getting sent to a new Slew/Centering table, but are being appended to the line belonging to the previous target.   e.g RR Lyr has the following line where 1.57 0.62 and 0.12 belong to the 3 locate frames from the after-calibration target 'Vega'

• TargetInfo chart for Vega says 'Target Centering may have failed, position pointing is uncertain',  even though it was centered ok.'   Vega was centered ok (even with generic caveat that the brightest star in the initial blind slew image (Locate 1) is the planned target star (in this case Vega).  Code shows that this message is produced if SavedPointingError_mins = vcNull.   SavedPointingError_mins is a local varaible in the OB.CentreTarget() routine and is set to vcNull near the start of CentreTarget() routine. Fixed by setting  'SavedPointingError_mins = PointingError_mins' in Link Brightest Star section of the routine.

• JPG Pictures of S Filter main frame from RR Lyr didn't have a spectral box.  Spectra box worked during testing using RR Lyr, and worked during live session for Vega. but didn't work for spectra box during live session for RR Lyr.  Believed to be fixed (bug was due to RGRG section of TakeMainScopeFrames referring to iset rather than jset.).

• Guide Runs for targets like HIP 87937 (15 x 2s) are not being combined into a single ImageSet of 30s duration.  This was something that was added in AstroMain 3.42.7 and should have worked.  Consider extending GuideSummary results to reflect a combined set. eg    2s (R) x 15.  Believed to be resolved/fixed in AstroMain 3.42.8 (2021-09-28).

• Modify AstroMain's Handbox routines to use newly added handbox actions in latest Sept 2021 version of the MeadeGeneric Driver.  Meade Generic 1.3.2 has been updated to allow 'scrollup, scrolldown, left, right' actions.  This change to AstroMain will allow direct commands to be used from Virtual Handbox to Scroll Up/Scoll Down on the LX200 handbox instead of using CommandBlind workarounds.  A checkbox option 'Use Handbox Workaround' (cboxUseMeadeHandboxWorkaround) can be used to re-enable the previous workarounds.

• Description of the Recent Targets section on Latest Session web page to be improved. Description to comprise a shorter first sentance, followed by more explanatary second sentance.

• Change Center and Target Crosses on JPG pictures to make them slightly smaller.  Crosses in ConvertFitsToJpg() routine were formally used as  +10 / -10 crosses (ie 20 pixel wide crosses. Routine has been modified to use +CR/-CR crosses where CR = 9 (ie 18 pixel wide crosses). With option of easily changing to CR=8 if required.

• The 'spectra' label on JPG Main Frame Pictures (S Filter) overposts or lies too close to the zero order target star and should be placed further away .

• Remove hyperlinks from shortened session report file (Session.LatestReport.htm) before upload to website.  Hyperlinks are meaningless for the short report as destinations are almost certainly absent given the selected report material.  WriteLatestLiveLogs() routine modified in AstroMain 3.42.8 to accomplish this improvement.

• Upload first spectral image from 'spectra' Targets to website in addition to the first non-spectral image .SaveMainImageToJpg() routine modified to accept new parameter (SpectraNo (=spectracount ) and used to flag whether 500px wide Image should be copied to live folder for upload to website or not.

• Get Current/Latest webpage to auto-update itself with session details, status etc.  Whilst the page autoupdates certain images (like the ObsPic, ManagerTab etc) session details are currently status and not updated.  Required development of a means by which this data can be autoupdated.  This is part of seeingthe progress of a autostarted session, without having to manually refresh the page.   Session details are now transfererd to the web site in a Session.Header.dat file rather than previous Session.Header.js (which is only read when the page is opened/refreshed.

• Increase the apparent speed that the Current/Latest Session web page takes to load.  Title and session details at top of page are currently only filled in once the whole page has loaded.   Page behaviour should be modified so that the title & session details are filled in without waiting for the entire page to load. This has been done by placing a <script> block in the <body> of page at position below the Title/Contents section (where fields to be filled in are) and before the various page sections with images & tables.  This script calls functions to import session details from Session.Header.dat and write them to DOM components (fields) .

• Create Chart showing distribution of image pixel differences between latest AllSky image and one taken 30s (eventually 3 minutes) beforehand.  Chart is prototype for articulating the photometric quality of the sky. For clear photometric skies distribution would be expected to be gaussian. Chart to be filtered on data lying above 30° altitude. Ideally the distribution plot will be of image differences between the most recent AllSky image and an image taken some 3 minutes earlier, but initially will use utilise CreateAllSkyDiffImage() routine that creates a difference image with the image taken 30s beforehand. Creation of the plot was inspired by the paper "Artificial Intelligence in Autonomous Telescopes" by William Mahoney & Karun Thanjavur  ( https://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/~billy/pubs/ASO_tfa_v0.pdf ).   ObsCamListener() routine piggy-backed to upload 'AllSky.LatestDiffDistribution.png' to website.   Picture displayed on Current Weather page for time being.  Files saved to session's night folder /_DiffDistribution folder. The first night (2021-09-29 S918) generated  1406 .png files (18 kB each, total 24 MB)

• When AstroPlan is started can there be a presumption that pictures/tables in live folder have already been uploaded to website and don't require reuploading until they subsequently get a new modified date.  Currently there is a long delay to get key new file up to website after starting AstroPlan, because it goes through the process of bulk loading some 150 files to website.  Require this 'bulk-uploading' to not needlessly happen.   New process shouldn't apply to key files (Session.Header.dat etc) which should alway be re-uploaded. There needs to be a backdoor option that allows files to be bulk-uploaded. (for example this will be needed when AstroPlan has been restarted near the beginning of a new session, and it is important to that a session's initial 'empty/null' images & tables are uplaoded at start of session.  AstroPlan waits 15s upon startup so that user can interact with checkbox option to Upload Complete Set of live Files at start or not. Default action is 'not' to but instead make a catalog of files and their last change date/time, so that only newly modified files will be uploaded.   In New Session has been flagged from AstroMain,  the catalog is reset, so that upload of new 'blank' files  is forced.

A SN calculation has been added to Measure_FocusProfile_Foc1 () routine.  It had been thought that the SN would increase as focus gets better (ie FWHM get smaller), but this doesn't seem to happen.  I guess there is still the same amount of star flux being captured whether the star is focused or defocused.  Only increasing the aperature area in line with increasing FWHM would the SN become lower with star defocusing.  SN should respond to sky transparency.  Getter lower if the focus star became covered by thin cloud.
