Session Aims & Highlights (2021-09-29)

Main aims

1. Targets. Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by time & conditions.
2. AstroMain. Test fixes, improvements and new features in AstroMain 3.42.8.

Highlights

• Targets.  Images from a total of x targets were acquired through the session.   Sky clear, but moon light and only moderate seeing
•   AstroMain.  AstroMain observatory control worked well and their were software or hardware glitches at all. 100% operational success.

Lowlights

•  Seeing  Seeing was only moderate and sometimes rather poor

• Near Zenith focus frames (associated with a renewed autostart attempt) were taken at same time as 180s main scope images were being acquired from job queue that was still running in the background.  After spotting an opportunity to commence autostart session again in order to use time for Near Zenith focusing rather than wait 9 mins for first target to arrive at the start of its time slot. the session was put back to Manual using the Obs.Manager's 'Manual' button. It was imagined that this would automatically terminate the job queue, but this didn't in fact happen.  as it sprung to life a few minutes later at the time that a new autostart initiated run begun taking Near Zenith Focus images. This caused user and software confusion with focus being changed whilst taking main image frames, and focusing profiles being messed (FWHM values flat-lining over part of the profile). Obs.Manger should offer more help and assistance to probably close down job queue which the user is intentionally stopping.   Extra checks should be present so that Fully Automated or Autostart modes can not be entered into whilst job queue is running.  Safeguards put in place in AstroMain 3.42.9 to prevent this from happening again.

• Level 2 (ImageSet) Guidestats being produced for each 2s frame rather than at end of all 7 images.     Problem occured for 61 Cyg (7 x 2s, SeqMode=Auto) and also for GSC 1224:29 (15 x 10s, SeqMode=Auto). Bug fixed (resetting SeqMode=Auto to SeqMode=VVRR wasn't being applied correctly)

• Job execution held up at xx:xx whilst waiting for CCD Cooler to stabilise at -15 degC even though set point was already on -15 degC.  Resolved in session by resetting lower power band to 68% from 64%, which allowed a trigger to decrease set point temperature to -20 degC. This is a known problem and whilst it was fixed earlier in CheckForStableCCDTemperature() routine it hadn't been fixed in  CheckForStableCCDTemperature(T) .  Fixed in AstroMain 3.42.9.

• Whilst session was suspended towards end of session the CCD Monitor allowed the CCD Cooler to rise above upper power threshold eventually reaching 100% and compromising the camera's ability to keep the CCD  at the set point temperature.  The CCD Setpoint temperature should have been raised by 5 deg. Although this didn't impact any imaging, should the session have resumed, the CCD would have already been setup at correct temperature which would have prevented a delay at the start of the next target..Logs shows that the bRaiseSetPoint flagged was raised at 05:21, but no action was taken.  Code changed so that CheckForChangeSetPointRequest() is called from Obs.Manager whilst the session is in suspended state.

• Session event  record"Image file [0000] hasn't been saved to disk, possible CCDSoft issue" (20:30).   This was due to the 'double tasking'  issue near start of session when Near Zenith autofocusing activities conflicted with  job queue imaging activities in the background.  Issues automatically resolved by CCDSoft restart and user activities to abort the two conflicting jobs.  The surface issue is understood and can be closed.   The underlying issue (two jobs allowed to run at same time) has been fixed to prevent the problem from reoccuring.

• Report message during Foc2 autofocusing on Near Zenith Focus Field error messages generated saying 'Unable to find SharpCap Image' .  This was due to the 'double tasking'  issue near the start of session when Near Zenith autofocusing activities conflicted with  job queue imaging activities in the background.   The immediate issue (not finding SharpCap message) is understood in this context and can be closed.  The underlying issue (two jobs allowed to run at same time) has been fixed to prevent the problem from reoccuring.

• CI Cyg not showing a Cam1 Box on Cam2 Reference Frame & Guide Frame images. It should be possible to use stored Cam2 offsets to infer the position of the Cam1 FOV on the Cam2 pictures, but in this situation the cam box should be drawn with dashed lines.  Dashed lines drawn in ImageMagicK using -draw  "stroke-dasharray 5 5  ". This has been implemented by changes to LinkCam2GuideFrame() and .  In this particular case problem was a WCS insert issue, but was fixed by using the custom routine 'CalcRaDecToXY()'  instead of the CCDSoft routine  'Image.RADecToXY() '

• CI Cyg producing Guide Stats results for 15s B image, but not the 5s V or 3s R image. Level 3 Guide Stats should be dropped in this situation.   Fixed in AstroMain 3.42.9.  Image GuideStats are no longer reported where the Total ImageSetExp time is < 90s

• Improve behaviour when queue resumes after being suspended occurs whilst in equilibration. After the session became suspended whilst in equilibration and before near-zenith focusing occured the job queue was started in 'suspended' mode.  After conditions improved dome opened, but the job queue then entered a 9 minute hold waiting for Target 1's time slot to begin.   Whilst execution may have then begun with Near Zenith focusing (job was aborted before this point),  the wait time would have been better spent by going directly to Near Zenith for Foc1/Foc2 focusing .

• Delay waiting for CCD to stabilise at new set point temperarture at -20 degC seemed somewhat excessive (xx;xx/0.  Criteria for stabilsation can probably  be relaxed when the hold point is just before Centering since centering/focusing provide extra time for CCD to stabilise before main images are taken.   Fixed an extra parameter 'Mode' has been added to CheckForStableCCDTemperature() routine, 1 (pre-centering) only waits until CCDTemp is acceptable,  2 (pre-main imaging) waits until CCDTemp has stabilised for 2 minutes.

• New AllSky Image Difference Distribution Graphs aren't being scaled well for Dusk & Dawn when sky brightness is rapidly changing.  Scaling was developed based on dark sky and wasn't tested against dusk/dawn situations where the ADU difference between two images is > 400 due to changing brightness and/or changing exposure time.

• Need to add gaussian curve fitting to AllSky Image Difference Distribution data, and illustrate on charts. A quicklook method of determining photometric sky quality has initially implemented based on Max Profile Value (in no. of Pixels in the peak bin), FHWM (in adu) & Peak Value offset (PeakProfileDelta in ADU). Later a more detail photometric sky quality was implemented based on PeakY,  C and RMS error.

• Extend Telecomms between AstroAllSky and AstroMain with the inclusion of sky brightness (SkyAduRate) or scope/each target , and Image Difference Stats. Involved extending TTelescopeTarget structure with the extra parameter SkyAduRate (double).

• Relax the conditions that produce a yellow session warning alert saying that Dome Az is more than 8 deg offset from Scope Az.  Nova Cas recieved this warning in session S918 when it was at 85 deg altutude which is a high altitude geometry effect that can often lead to the dome azimuth being more than 15-20 deg offset from the scope's azimuth.   Code changed in Astrom 3.43.1 so that warnings are now only given when Altitude is < 80 deg.

• Add a new section to Target Execute that takes a 10s Cam2 Reference frame even if Guiding is not activated.  This is for situations where guiding and Foc1 focusing tasks are going to be skipped due to very bright star in starfield.   New routine  'Guider.TakeCam2ReferenceImage()' added to achieve this action, called from ExecuteTarget
  when T.GuidingScope = 0 And bTakeCam2ReferenceImage = True.

• Add ability to run a single target/mosaic from AstroMain's Observing/Single&Mosaics tab based on a target held in the Targets database.  Requires some means of selecting Target ID & retrieval of target from database.  Feature added to AstroMain 3.43.3 (2021-10-04), but it requires user to know the Target ID of the required target. Two new fields added to the Observing Single/Mosaic tab (cboxUseTargetIdOb & txtTargetIdOb).  Basic implementation provided and tested in AstroMain 3.34.3. A future improvement could involve some means of identifying / capturing the required target id. Prehaps a selection list based on the text that is entered in the Target Name field.

• Query. Why is quadratic fit for Focus Profile 5 (TS80-wide) so poor (20:48). Playing back shows that the best focus position determining for Wide Search Profile was valid and appropriate.  Position is now even better in AstroMain 3.44 as it uses new MaxPixel weighted FWHM method.  The fitted quadratic curve uses 7 points for fitting (9 points rejected), 6 of these points are reasonable, but the last of these points corresponds with point 16/16 FWHM 12.46, max pixel 640. It outlying position is enough to throw off the curve fit by a considerable amount. The max pixel value is the second lowest in the whole profile.  Visually it easy to demonstrate that this point should be rejected, but it is hard to define a set of checks that would have eliminated it.  Fixed by rejecting points with a max pixel < 15% of the peak max value (previously the threshold was <10% of peak max value.  This rejects this last point and my improve other such profiles.

• Updates to Session.Header.dat not being seen by webpage during start-up phase, making it unclear whether things were progressing or not. This probably happened because AstroPlan was busy uploading various starting images/tables causing a delay in sending the session/autostart details to the webpage. Consider multiple points for the file or a high priority queue. Issue may have been improved by using the user option to catalog existing Live files without updating when starting AstroPlan. Closed after review (2021-10-22).

• Consider submitting new transient targets to a new 'Transients' project rather than to the 'Supernova' project .  Transients that are not yet defined as supernovae and are not associated with any other specific project are saved to the newly created Transients project (Project ID=51).  Transients that are subsequently determined to be SN are then automatically moved to the 'Supernova' project.(Project ID=15).

• Must Do targets to be allowed in E or W hemispheres without bias but other targets should be given a higher weighting when lying in the eastern hemisphere, especially longer duration targets (eg 5 x 180s) where guiding is better. Shorter duration targets should probably not be constrained either way.  Item placed on hold until guiding performance is reanalysed following the installation of a new (LX200) Dec Motor Unit on 2021-10-15.   Following change to Polar Alignment the guiding issues west of meridian has lessened, and decision made to close item (2021-12-20)
