Session Aims & Highlights (2024-09-15)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. ImageLink/TheSky6.  Monitor session for any further incidents of the issue where the ImageLink process freezes for 5 minutes leading to Target Abort & Session Suspension.

Highlights-

• Targets. 30/30 planned targets observations were completed.
• ImageLink/TheSky6.  There were 2 incidents of the issue where the ImageLink process freezes for 5 minutes, leading to Target Abort and Session Suspension.  Extra tracing has been added to AstroMain 3.69.7 which will hopefully narrow down the specific point and cause of the problem.
• Dome. No issues opening/closing shutter during session.  Dome closed and parked ok at end of session.

• AllSky Star Count values were exceeding low throughout the session, requiring that 'Too Few Stars' facility be turned off.  AstroAllSky produces a Star Count value for each AllSky Image (acquired every 30s) and sends this information to AstroMain, where it can optionally be used as a Sky Conditions indicator.  ng ie to Obs.Manager Main Loop, so that a Green SaveSessionAlert is raised when RainWhilstShutterNotClosedReported = True and Zigbee.ShutterBotSensor.Open = False (ie Closed). Star Counts during the last session the previous night (S1243, 2024-09-14)  reached up to 40-50 stars, but in the S1244 session the star count is only 5-12.  The AllSky camera images (see Fig 1) seems to encumbered by consensation/dew which is likely reducing star count compared to the previous night, the moon has also reached 93% phase and is lighting up the sky slightly more than yesterday when the Moon was at 85% phase. Prehaps the sky is more hazy during the S1244 session that yesterday ?  AllSky camera needs to be checked and dried from any internal condensation during daylight hours tomorrow. As it turned out the condensation disappeared from Camera by itself the following day.

• ObsCam camera position is poorly centered. Following issues with the Observatory's LAN link on 2024-09-07 the ObsCam was likely knocked whilst getting to the Observatory's Ethernet Switch, such that the Telescope is no longer centred on ObsCam pictures in recent sessions including the S1244 session. Issue fixed 2024-09-16 using center-line facility in AstroObsCam to guide the repositioning of the camera.  (An old Continuous Improvement ticket (get url reference) calls for the camera to be permanently fixed in position, but this hasn't be done as yet)

• Job Queue froze whilst performing an Image Link on Locate Frame (00:21) . Whilst performing a plate solution on Locate 1 Frame for Target 14/30 (AT2021aeft) the Obs.Overseer gave a warning "ScopeMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 00:21:02 )", a TheSky6 Alert with message "TheSky6 isn't running or isn't working correctly" and a warning "Task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time?  (00:23)" . The ObsManager aborted the Target and the session was suspended..  Issue resolved itself after a few minutes, with results of Image Link (solved in 319.3s) being posted whilst ObsCam was taking a 'Supended Session' image. The Locate Frame involved (#1244120)  took only 0.7s to image link during the later Analyse ReducedFolder operaton (post-session).  Problem has occurred before in several recent sessions (S1243, S1242, S1240 & S1235). The issue was investigated (Investigation - Job Queue freezing whilst performing a Locate Frame Image Link, leading to Session Suspension, 2024-09-12) and tracing identfied that the freeze isn't triggered directly by the 'InsertWCS' call (Image Linking) but is triggered instead by following GetObjectRaDec() , .dObjectRa, .dObjectDec calls which access the result of the Image Linking.  The insertion of short (500ms) delays between calls to TheSky6 from AstroMain's ImageLinking routines, added to AstroMain 3.69.8 (2024-09-16) was eventually deemed to have fixed the issue after seeing no further incidents of the problem during the following 4 sessions S1245-S1248A  (2024-09-16 to 2024-09-28).

• Job Queue froze whilst performing an Image Link on Locate Frame (04:38) . Whilst performing a plate solution on Locate 2 Frame for Target 2930 (GCVS RR Tau) the Obs.Overseer gave a warning "ScopeMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 04:38:57)", a TheSky6 Alert with message "TheSky6 isn't running or isn't working correctly" and a warning "Task in StartTargetGuiding/StartGuider is taking a long time?  (00:23)" . With the recognition that the freeze point associated with issue "Job Queue is freezing whilst performing an Image Link on a Locate Frame, leading to session suspension" appears to be from the code in SolvePlateWithTheSky() routines that gets TheSky.GetObjectRaDec() & reads TheSky.dObjectRa & TheSky.dObjectDec it is proposed to add further tracing message statements to see if the freeze point is associated with the TheSky.GetObjectRaDec() call itself or the subsequent 'TheSky.dObjectRa' and/or 'TheSky.dObjectDec' property reads

• Add Thread.Sleep statements to AstroMain's SolvePlateWithTheSky() routine to slow down calls to TheSky6.. With the recognition that the freeze point associated with issue "Job Queue is freezing whilst performing an Image Link on a Locate Frame, leading to session suspension" apperas to be from the code that gets TheSky.GetObjectRaDec() and reads TheSky.dObjectRa & TheSky.dObjectDec it is proposed to add Thread.Sleep(500) lines in between statements in this code section to slow down the calls/reads to TheSky6, and potentially resolve the issue.

• Install Replacement Temperature/Humidity Sensor "Greenhouse2".  Install replacement Aqara Temperature/Humidity Multi-Sensor on the Observatory's ZigBee Network to replace the original 'Greenhouse2' multisensor (installed 2023-10-10) which is no-longer reachable, despite a number of attempts to re-pair it using the Phoscon App.

• Modify AstroMain's ObsManager main routine to defer Session Suspension for up to 6 minutes in the event that TheSky6 stops responding.  In an attempt to mitigate the negative effects associated with the recent issue where the JobQueue freezes whilst plate solving a Locate frame,  the ObsManager should be modified to wait for up to 6 minutes before committing to aborting the current target and begin suspending the session. This should obviously be done in a way that doesn't prevent the session from being suspended & shutter closed in the event of critical weather conditions.  Implemented in AstroMain 3.69.8.

• Include the 'swx-overview' image on the Observatory's 'Aurora Watch' web page. Whilst the image at https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/swx-overview-large.gif is captured and used on Date Stamped Aurora pages (e.g allsky_aurora_2024-09-12.htm), the latest chart is included on the Aurora Watch page. The 'allsky_aurora_watch.htm' page should be updated to show this image.  Implemented 2024-09-16.

• Check the values of the Weather Station's outdoor T/H sensor.  The values of outdoor temperature during a live session have been occasionally quite different from Observatory Temperatures when the Shutter Dome is open and temperature inside/outside might expected to be pretty similar. The installation of replacement "Greenhouse2" sensor provides an opportunity to cross-check the weather station's outdoor sensor values, but positioning the new zigbee sensor next to it for a few days before relocating the new sensor into the Greenhouse. Comparison of Outdoor Temperature and Outdoor Humidity as measured by Weather Station Sensor and Zigbee Sensor are shown in Fig 2 and Fig 3 respectively.
