Observatory - Wired Ethernet Cable Connection

Existing LAN Communications & problems
LAN communication to/from the Observatory has up to now used 'Ethernet Over Powerline'. Whilst it is more reliable/faster than WIFI to the Observatory, it does suffer from occasional outage of 2 - 12 hours duration, during which time important tasks can't be achieved :

Whilst the LAN Connection can remain stable for a number of weeks at a time, there are then occassions when several outage occur over the course of just a few days.

Solution to LAN communication problems
The solution is to retro-install an Ethernet Cable between the router in the house and the Observatory's Ethernet Switch, but due to the somewhat complicated route for the cable it's remained a nice-to-have idea up to now.

However with the problem not going away and even increasing in frequency, its finally come to a head, and decision taken to install a CAT6 Ethernet Cable.

A route for the new cable has been identified which has length estimated at 31.8m and will need to drill 5 new holes.

It has been decided to go with a patch cable (a cable with a male ethernet adapter already attached at each end), as this saves the effort of cutting & crimping cable wire into plugs etc.  A patch cable of 30m is too short, but a patch cable of 40m is readily available.

New Cable
A VOIETLOT Outdoor Cat 6  Cable 40m has been ordered from Amazon (product page) which should arrive today (2024-10-18).

Cable Routing
- pass cable from Router into new hole in computer room stud wall
- thread cable behind wall and along roof eaves
- thread cable up into loft above
- take cable through loft to the end of the house
- pass cable down through new hole into Bedroom Cupboard below
- pass cable down through new hole into the Garage below
- take cable down to floor of Garage
- pass cable through new hole in block wall to emerge on exterior side
- take cable across chipings and past greenhouse and then bury
- pass cable around side garden wall , and lay under fence line
- take cable along fence line through garden border and bury /cover
- pass cable through new hole in the bottom of Observatory's AllSky/Weather Bay
- connect cable to Observatory's Ethernet Switch

Updates:

Interior cable installation (2024-10-18)
- Cable was tested beforehand by plugging one end to router and the other to a computer, and checking that it could browse internet pages k
- Cable was laid along identified interior cable route, beginning in the computer/router room and going as far as the garage
- As the cable become accidentally bent when loops of cable with inadventally pulled into the drilled holes, the cable was again tested after laying interior round by the same method used initial test
- cable ties will  be added later on, once the cable has been run all the way to the Observatory,  plugged in and tested.

Exterior cable installation (2024-10-19)
- Cable laid along identified exterior cable route, beginning in the garage and going to the Observatory AllSky/Weather Computing Bay , containing the Observatory's Ethernet Switch.
- Cable plugged into Observatory's Ethernet Switch and speed tests conducted from Development Laptop in the house.:
