Session Aims & Highlights (2024-11-10)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. Crab Nebula.  Acquire 1x1 binned, 60s exposures of M1 / CM Tau to assess the needs/limitations for the Crab Nebula Pulser Project.
3. IK Peg. Acquire images of IK Peg, a white dwarf / binary system in Pegasus and around 154 ly from earth.
4. C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). Acquire images of comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)

Highlights

• Targets. 18/33 planned targets observations were completed with 5 targets partially completed. 5 ToO targets added to the Observing Plan (IK Peg, T CrB, C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), CM Tau & Jupiter) were all successfully completed. Images from other targets failed as they were abort / or missed starts due to insertion of ToO targets or due to obscured sky view due to software/driver issue associated with the Dome not moving.  Images from some of the partially completed targets will likely be rejected due to obscured sky view issue.
• Crab Nebula. 60s exposures of Crab Nebula / CM Tau were taken at planned 1x1 binning at C, Xo (BB) and Dual-Band FIlter
  IK Peg. Images of IK Peg were acquired
• Dome Slews.  There were no dome slew anomalies during session, but DeviceHub.Dome ran into issue that prevented the dome from being able to be moved to the telescope position.
  Dome. There was no issues opening/closing shutter during session. Dome closed and parked ok at end of session.

• There were a major event at which held up the session, lost contact with the dome and led to imaging with Dome at the wrong Azimuth (02:59 - 03:08+).   Multiple red alerts raised, ObsMonitor alert at 03:04:11 with message "Obs.Monitor appears to be frozen in section 'Monitor Dome Azimuth' (last cycle at 03:00:09)", ObsManager alert at 03:04:12 with the message "Obs.Manager is frozen in 'PHD2 Data Stream Monitoring' (last cycle at 02:59:25)", a green Obs.Manager all-clear at 03:04:16 with message "Obs.Manager has resumed again after 4.8 min",   a Dome Slew' alert at 03:08:06 with the message "Dome slew held up at Az. 111.6° (Delay 180s)".   Problem was noticed at around 04:30 or so and a 'lockdown' was instigated to collect data on the situation from various programs running. TheSky6 was displaying a mscorlib error dialog with the message "Object synchronization method was called from an unsychronized block of code" . CCDSoft was showing image  "01265219.AT2022uqw.FIT" containing no visible stars. ObsViewer was showing Telescope at Az 233°/Alt 46°, but the Dome was opened and sitting at Az 112° (121° difference from the scope) The issue was resolved at 04:38 to 04:45 or so, which saw DeviceHub being restarted, to pick up a new Dome Connection. Report File shows following

  DeviceHubDome shows a SlewToAzimuth command at 03:05:06.076   ( SlewToAzimuth: Azimuth = 90.00000 (done) )
  but this isn't logged by the Pulsar Dome. Its last SlewToAzimuth command was the one at  02:56:38.452 (SlewToAzimuth  Start 111.64)
  There was a Close Shutter commands  at 02:52:45.950 ( CloseShutter: (done) ) and 03:04:19.920 (CloseShutter: (done) ) with intervening Open Shutter command at 02:55:40.971 OpenShutter: (done)

Minor Issues

• AstroMain's ScopeMonitor froze for 8.7 minutes (02:44). A ScopeMonitor red alert was raised at 02:46:26 with the message "ScopeMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 02:44:42)" , followed by a red 'TheSky6 Alert' at 02:46:29 with the message "TheSky6 program isn't responding". Eventually the issue resolved itself and a green all-clear alert at 02:53:22 with the message "ScopeMonitor has resumed again (02:53) after 8.7 mins".  Unclear what the exact cause of the problem was in this case.   It is proposed to monitor future session to see if this is a more general issue or was a very rare or one-off event.

Small Defects

• There were 3 cases where a yellow 'Dome Discrepency' alert was raised with message "Difference between Dome Az and Telescope Az is > 8 deg" (02:33, 04:39, 04:48). Yellow alerts were raised for 3 slews (RX And at 02:33, CM Tau at 04:39, Scholz's Star at 04:48) with the message "Difference between Dome Az and Telescope Az is > 8 deg". Are these alerts unexpected / significant and are rightly raised  or are they entirely expected or feasible based on the target Alt/Az. & Dome Geometry and shouldn't be raised. Examining the slew ato RX And at 02:33 its appears that the alert was raised because the SlewMonitor had determined that slew was completed (both telescope & dome had Slewing=False) and that there was a large discrepency between Dome & Telescope Az.  But shortly after the Dome slewed to the correct final slaved location so that for main part the Dome/Telescope Az Delta was small (~1 deg).   These yellow alerts are simply a Dome Slew Anomalies with a different expression. Issue eventually fixed on 2024-11-15 by enabling DeviceHub's Composite Slewing and making adjustments to how AstroMain's Slew Monitor operates.

• "TheSky6"  Alert" was unnecessarily raised whilst TheSky6 was being restarted (04:36).  A red alert with message "TheSky6 program isn't running" was raised at 04:36:06.   The alert and associated report message were unnecessary and shouldn't have been given as the TheSky6 was in the process of being restarted. A bRestartingTheSky flag should have been used to temporarily disable this alert.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.72.6, the "TheSky6 check when session runnning" management section is modifed so that raising of the 'TheSky6' alert is skipped when bRestartingTheSky=True.
