Session Aims & Highlights (2024-11-17)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. ReSync Telescope.  Resync Telescope atstart of session and perform short mapping before parking and restarting telescope.

Highlights

• Targets. 10/33 planned targets observations were completed with 9 other target partially completed.  Other target failed due to cloud or snow showers, threat of  rain or snow or session suspension  I target failed due to Hardware (Dome / Dome Driver)
• Resynce Telescope. Operation to resync telescope and carry out a short mapping job was successfully achieved.
• Dome. There was an issue opening/closing shutter at around 05:54 - 06:04.  Dome closed and parked at end of session Ok

• A red Dome Alert was raised with message "Dome hasn't reached Closes state after 120s" (06:00).  After prior trouble with Dome not detecting that the shutter had opened at 05:54, actions were taken by the ObsManager to Restart DeviceHub/Dome Controller. At 06:00:26 a red 'Dome Alert' was raised with the message "Dome hasn't reached 'Closed' state after 120s during SoftSuspend ", with was directly following at 06:00:39 with a red Dome Opening alarm/alert with the message "Dome failed to finish opening after 140s (ShutterState=vcNull)". Report file shows the following:

   Pulsar and Device Hub logs to be examined. Pulsar logs show a CloseShutter request at 06:03:14, and the ShutterState changes to 3 (Closing)

Minor Issues

• There was a failure of CCD Imaging during Foc1 Wide Focusing Profile (19:56). After 8 focus frames, CCDSoft encountered a unhandled exception, and user invited to open CCDSoft in a debugger.  Code is not availble and the Cancel option was used. CCDSoft continued running but it was not possible to take images. CCDSoft was restarted using the 'RestartCCDSoft' backdoor facility, which resolved the problem. It isn't clear if the Job Executor or the ObsManager would have resolved the problem automatically or not.  Logs show the following

   It is unclear what caused the  issue.  Issue was resolved in-session by user and issue is closed after review.

• Dome opened with covering of snow on it - perform Observatory check. (  ).  Dome was reopened at xx  and 05:54 with shutter/dome having a covering of wet snow on it.  Following incident a couple of years ago when snow fell on to the front of the telescope when opening the shutter the Observatory should be checked in morning for any snow/water ingress onto the Telescope.  Should snow protection lock have been put on the Observatory operations once it was know that showers were of snow not rain ?  Obsrevatory check in the morning and interior of observatory and all equipment were fine.

• Job Progress appeared to be waiting in vain for CCD Camera to  Stabilise.  CCD Monitor/Job Executer  reported "Wait On Camera (waiting for CCD to stabilise at -25°C)" , but examing the CCD Status in CCDSoft showed that CCD was -20.4°C with cooler power of 62%.   Without a cooling power of 90-100% there was no way the CCD could bridge across to -25°C.  It would seem that setpoint temperature was still set at -20°C, and hadn't been changed to -25°C.  It isn't clear how long the job executor would have waited for stabilisation to occur and when it woud have timed out in some way.   A user interventation was made to update the set point temperature to -25°C which resolved the problem and after CCD reached/stabilised at -25°C the job execution continued. Underlying issue needs investigation.

• Resume Session failed - Shutter hasn't opened after 100s (05:54). When Session was being resumed and dome was opened, the Open Dome command successfully operated to open the dome's shutter  as indicated by Zigbee Shutter Sensors, however the Dome.ShutterStatus didn't reach Closed state.  Report file shows the following:

  This is an occasional issue with the Pulsar Dome system. Pulsar and Device Hub logs to be examined. Pulsar Dome log shows 'OpenShutter' request at 05:54:38, and ShutterState changed from 1 (closed) to 2 (opening) and then staying 'stuck' on 2 (opening) till end of log at 05:56:30, even though the zigbee sensor shows shutter reaching the Open State (0) at 05:55:21.  After restarting the Dome Controller (with power off at 05:56:36) and reconnecting to the Dome at 05:57:12, the ShutterState initially showed an error / unknown value (6) , before the Shutter state quickly changed to 0 (Open) at 05:57:13, before quickly changing to 2 (opening) at 05:57:14 and then remaining as 2 (opening) until end of file at 06:01:02.  On restarting the Dome Controller and reconnecting to the Dome ShutterState was still showing 2 (opening) at 06:01:44. A CloseShutter request was made at 06:03:14, and the ShutterState changes to 1 (Closed)  at 06:04:02 (indicating a closing time of 48s).

• Two Dome Slews were reported to have held up (00:23 & 03:12). Two yellow 'Dome Slew' alerts were raised during the session. The first at 00:23:06 with the message "Dome slew held up at Az. 93.8, 93.7, 93.6° (Total delay 50s) " and the second at 03:12:55 with the message "Dome slew held up at Az. 132.3, 132.4, 161.1, 161.2° (Total delay 100s)" .   First Case: Telescope Slew from Az 97.71 to 67.63 (or 67.80 at end)   . Logs suggest dome inactive between
  Pulsar Dome Log show only initial SlewToAzimuth request at 00:21:44.358 (the next call at 00:27:33.513 with a subsequent 1° nudge in dome position). The DomePath suggests that the dome was physically held up/slipping when trying to pass 93.8 to 93.6°.     Case 2 shows initial SlewToAzimuth request at 03:10:28.494, with no further  SlewToAzimuth before concluding the slew. DomePath suggests that dome was physically held up/slipping trying to pass 132.3-132.4° and 161.1-161.2°.   The issue is put down to the cold conditions, but should be monitored, prehaps the tightness of the Dome Rotation Wheels need adjusting ?

Small Defects

• Reporting using "Dome Is .." instead of  "Dome is ...".  There are several places where reporting show "Dome Is .." instead of "Dome is", for example "Dome Is opening",  "Dome Is open".  Fixed in AstroMain 3.72.7.   Also fixed "Due To.." and "Waited For.."

• There was a problem writing "...profile01.oid002.foc1.Focus_Field_0.wide.gif" (19:54). At the start of the Focus Profile for Near Zenith Foc 1 (Wide), an error message was reported :
    "Problem writing "..\2024-11-17 S01271\_Logs\FocusProfile.20241117.profile01.oid002.foc1.Focus_Field_0.wide.gif"
   Logs show the same message at 19:54:48.  The profile began ok and the '..Focus_Field_0.wide.gif'  file was subsequently written to ok.  It is unclear what caused the  issue.  Issue closed after review, it is put down to being an unexaplained glitch with no consequence.

• There was a reporting issue whilst waiting for Pulsar Dome to be switched on (06:01).   The intended report line
      'Wait on Pulsar Dome..  Ok  Waited 20s for controller to initialise"
  was interrupted by the zigbee sensor message
     "> Dome Power                  Info      Dome Power has switched on    (06:01:24, off time 15 sec)
  Issue fixed in AstroMain 3.72.7 by allowing 2s after Dome Power has been switched on before using the AddComment ((Wait on Pulsar Dome...") statement. This provides a 2s window to allow the Zigbee message to be written on its own line, and the 'Wait On Pulsar Dome  etc." to be written in full on its own line

• AllSky Camera images are showing a dark area/object in NW/WNW direction at around horizon level. Camera to be checked in daylight hours. Checking the camera show some more spiders and web in the camera, which was removed. The dark area/object was most likely a spider sitting on the camera's fisheye lens.

• When Autostart (Waiting) is cancelled by setting Mode to Manual, the session state stays Autostart (Waiting).  A second press of the Manual needs to be made to show session state as 'Normal'  .  Tests show that the Mode & State are put to 'Manual' but there is quite a delay in this happening.  Tests show that around 9s or so is taken up by changing Filter to Filter 1 and moving the Focuser to the current temperature adjusted position.

• Slewtable shows LHA2 value of -21.68 (outside of the expected -12 to +12 range). Slewtable entry for Target 4/44 (LEDA 1762640) at Az 233/Alt 50.1  showed a LHA2 value of -21.68 . Local Hour Angle (LHA) should have values between -12.0 (east of Meridian) and +12.0 (west of Meridian).  The LHA is similarly shown as -21.70h is the pre-drill Target Check against 'Calculating Hour Angle'..   With a Lst at the time of c. 0.9333 and Target Ra of c. 22.5917, the current code produces a LHA of -21.66. The correct LHA number is 2.3416.   (= -21.66 + 24 ).   Fixed in AstroMain 3.72.7 using the correct code is

• Target Name in the Observing Plan in AstroPlan is different to the name in Job Queue Tab in AstroMain. It was noticed that the name for Target  3/33 on AstroPlan's Plan Form was "M31 w/Nova 2024-11b"  whilst name for same target on the Job Queue tab in AstroMain was 'M31 Spiral Galaxt w/EGN .." (rest obscured). This caused some confusion as M31 w/Nova 2024-11b was expected and the name 'M31 .. w/EGN' looked like a different target.  This is likely due to subtle difference in best name format of extragalactic nova.

Continuous Improvement

• Find room on AstroMain's Manager tab and on ObsViewer picture for showing new Weather Station fields for Rain & Light. The Observatory's planned new Ecowitt Wittboy Weather Station reads Rain via a Haptic sensor and Light (in lux) via a light sensor.  These 'Ws' fields provide alternate view on 'Cs' fields provided by the observatory's CloudSensor.     Light (Ws) and Rain (Ws) have been added to Manager Tab in AstroMain 3.72.8. Still looking for a way of adding Rain (Ws) field to ObsViewer, as well as Ch1 Temperature & Ch1 Humidity.

• When using Composite Slewing, only show Telescope Slewing in Mauve when the Scope is actually moving. After enabling Composite Slewing in DeviceHub it is annoying to have the Telescope Slewing Flag change to Purple when Dome makes minor 1° adjustments in azimuth.  It is proposed that a mauve flag or a mauve background to Text Boxes is only used when the Telescope is actually moving, as in a true Telescope Slew.  Ticket is on-hold pending a fix to MeadeGeneric Driver, with a possible return to disabling Composite Slewing.

• Use Short Names to describe Sky Brightness (Darkness) and Sky Brightness Excess instead of adu/s numbers. This is to make the information more relateable and more meaningful. This idea has been possibly been proposed before (cite Session/date)
