Session Aims & Highlights (2024-11-16)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. Composite Slewing.  Test use of Composite Slewing after fixes to prevnet sideeffects from efffecting measurement of dome slewing speeds and PHD2 Guiding

Highlights

• Targets. 19/41 planned targets observations were completed with 1 other target partially completed.  Other target failed due to rain, threat of rain or cloud/session suspension.
• Composite Slewing.  Composite Slewing worked well as did the fixes to calculate correct dome speeds, to not give false dome hold-ups and to guide with PHD2 with stopping when dome progressively moves in 1 deg steps acoording to the telescope tracking.
• Guiding.  Issue with guiding turning part way through imaging run has been resolved and guiding performance during the S1270 session was normal.
• Dome. There was no issues opening/closing the shutter during session. Dome closed and parked at end of session Ok

• There were 4 outages in CloudSensor data during the early part of the session (19:52, 20:17, 20:40, 21:14). There were 7 'Cloud Sensor' red alerts between 19:52 and 21:29, with messages like "Cloud Sensor data has been inactive for more than 5 min"  & "Cloud Sensor data has been inactive for more than 20 min", that were associated with 4 outages in CloudSensor data lasting 25.2, 12.6, 32.7, 21.9 minutes.   Whilst there was an immediate concern that this related to a true problem with Cloud Sensor or with  Communication, it was quickly established that these outage corresponded to periods when AstroWeather was being tested on the Development Computer as part of integration of the observatory's planned new weather station.  It is a significant issue if activities on the Development Computer are interrupting/effecting activities on the AllSky Weather/Observatory Computers especially during a live session.   AstroWeather should be updated to prevent records being sent to the observatory computers using tcp/ip when running on Development Computer. A separate Continuous Improvement ticket has been raised to split Weather Station and Cloud Sensor tasks into separate threads, so that one can be tested in isolation from the other.  Implemented in AstroWeather

• Rain Detected whilst Dome Still Open (23:03). At 23:03:16 there was an 'Unexpected Dome Closure' red alert with the message "Dome is unepectedly cloiding (Poor Conditions)", followed 2s later by a 'Dome Unsafe' red alert "Cloud Sensor detects Rain but Shutter Sensor is open".  This was due to the approach of a rain front, which put down some spots of rain ahead of it whilst the sky was still relatively clear (see Fig 1 & Fig 2).  The CloudSensor/Dome Relay operated immediately to close the shutter (as per design) and with the limited rain there was likely no damage to telescope and other equipment.  Log messages at 23:03:16.39 show a dump of the weather/cloud sensor data that AstroMain had at the time.  This showed Rain 3.5, Clarity 41.4 (i.e. clear sky). AllSky images show cloud appearing along the northern horizon from around 22:54 with spits of rain appearing on the north side of the camera at 23:02:34, but sky was completely clear overhead. Logs show Shutter was fully closed at 23:03:59. Annotation shows CloudSensor Rain still at 0 at this time and only changed to Rain 2.6 at 23:08:47 returning to Rain 0 at 23:09:49. Rain values are possibly delayed by 30-60s in the annotation ?.  The AllSky annotation doesn't show Rain 3.5 at 23:03:16, but visual evidence of falling rain drops is definitely present,   Images suggest rain drops stopped shortly after. Clarity was still at 40-41 at 23:09.  The lowest clarity value (36.9) comes somewhat later at 23:18.  The rain / dome closure occurred whilst telescope was slewing to Target 17/41 (LEDA 867006 w/SN2024ttf) . Pre-Slew Conditions check at 23:03 showed Clarity 38.7 (Stars 9 - suppressed due to bright moon-lit sky), with Rain Radar forecast indicating 'Possible Rain (next 15 mins). Closed after review.   Procedues operated according to or close to design. Whilst Clarity was good the nightsummary plot shows a trend of deteriorating star count.  At the time the 'Too Few Stars Threshold was set to 10, and a star count of 9 if it persisted would have triggered a SoftSuspend call at some point during the target, but operations would have continued running all the time that Cloud/Rain stayed above their thresholds.  It could be argued that as 9 stars was below the threshold (10) at the pre-slew conditions check the session should have been suspended and the Target made to wait until conditions improved.

Small Defects

• When ObsViewer opens on Development Computer the grayed telescope is shown pointing at the ground.  After starting a Test Session on Development Computer the grayed Telescope is shown pointing at the ground, rather than expected orientation pointing at its 'Park' position (Az 180/Alt 3). It doesn't do this on Observatory Computer, and it doesn't do it on Development Computer when running is Visual Studio and development code.   It only happens when running AstroMain.exe on Development Computer from the  '/More Programs/AstroMain'.  The issue happens when TP.ScopeAlt is -99 (vcNull) when drawing Scope in ObsViewer. Fixed in AstroMain, Alt 3 is used when TP.ScopeAlt = vcNull ,  and Az 180 is used when TP.ScopeAz = vcNull.

Continuous Improvement

• Add small panel flags to AstroMove to indicate when AstroMain & AstroPlan source code have been copied to Observatory Computer.  AstroMove's 'From Observatory' tab doesn't have room to shown a progress bar indicator for AstroMain Source & AstroPlan Source, not an easily way of showing % copied.  It is proposed to add a small panel/flag that can show in green when the copying has been completed, or failed in red, or green flashing when in process of copying ?

• Split Weather and CloudSensor tasks into two separate thread. Presently the tasks of watching for changes in Weather and Cloud Sensor files, their reading, parsing and tcp/ip communication with other computers/ports occurs in a single thread for historic reasons.  It is more sensible to split these two separate (though similar) activities into separate threads (WsServer and CsServer). In this way, one of the tasks can be tested without involving the other ?

• Add AllSky Star Count, TooFewStars Threshold, bHardSuspend state & bSoftSuspend state to data dump when Dome unexpectedly shuts.  Add additional data to the data already dumped to log file when there is an unexpected closure of the dome.  This will be a closure instigated by the AstroGuard or manually in DeviceHub or more likely by the CloudSensor/Dome Relay.

• AstroMain's ObsViewer should show white flags when CloudSensor data is inactive.  Pictures from S1170 when CloudSensor was accidently made inactive whilst testing AstroWeather on the Development Computer showed green flag for Rain, Clarity & Light with static values.  Flags should be showed with a white flag to indicate data issue.  Implemented in AstroMain 3.72.6 using the condition check

• Consider whether a Star Count below the Too Few Stars threshold at the time of Pre-Slew Conditons Check should trigger a Session Suspension. There was a minor rain event during S1270 session and the Shutter was closed by the CloudSensor/Dome relay rather than by AstroMain. Although skies were clear overhead (Clarity 38.7) at the time of pre-slew Conditions Check the star count was 9 which is just below the Too Few Stars threshold.  Since the target hadn't yet started (at least not slewed to yet), should a session suspension have been triggered and the target made to wait until conditions had improved, rather than proceed.  A solution was subsequently implemented in AstroMain 3.74 where a second TooFewStars data field (numTooFewStarsHardThreshold) was been added to AstroMain's Manager tab that specifies a threshold that causes ObsManager to perform a Hard Suspend in event of a falling StarCount (see CI S1291).
