Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.

Highlights

• Targets. 29/42 planned targets observations were completed with 5 targets partially completed.  Remaining targets failed due to cloud / session suspension.
•   Dome. There was no issues opening/closing the shutter during session. Dome closed and parked at end of session Ok

Notes

• 6 suspensions during the session due to cloud
   
• A very strong wind squall or even a small tornado was recorded at 2024-12-19 at 07:55 (see Fig 3)

• A 'UPS System' red alert was raised during the session (20:09).  A 'UPS System' red alert was raised at unknown time but recorded at 00:00 with the message "Mains Power Outage/Glitch at 00:00:00"  this was followed by a green all-clear at 20:09:51 with the message "UPS running on Mains Power at 20:09:51 (outage time Unknown)" . To be investigated.  Neither the Observatory Computer or the AllSky/Weather Computer seems to have recorded a failure of the power supply (neither computer mentions running on laptop battery) suggesting that the outage was momentarily, and was something that the Eaton UPS reacts as per its required role.  The Eaton Companion confirmed apparent power glitch at 20:09:46 (See Fig 1) with the alert message "The system is powered by the UPS battery" .The UPS reported "The System is powered by the utility' (ie Mains Power) at 20:09:51.  This suggests that the outage was 5s, but is it suspected that the UPS system waits for around 5s before it confirms that the system is powered by mains supply again and the real outage is much less than this.  The supposed power glitch at 20:09 wasn't seen by the UPS System running in the AllSky/Weather Computer, however that system did record a power glitch the following day at 12:54:56 which the Observatory Computing Bay's UPS System didn't record (again suggesting a momentarily glitch but with a standard 5s delay before it reports that the system is powered by the utility again. The reporting of the supposed glitch as being at time 00:00 is dealt with under a separate defect ticket below.
Closed after review (Session, UPS System, AstroMain)

Small Defects

• A 'UPS Utility' outage was recorded by AstroMain's UPS Monitor without a correct date and with an Unknown Outage time (20:09).  A 'UPS System' red alert was raised at unknown time but recorded at 00:00 with the message "Mains Power Outage/Glitch at 00:00:00". The reporting of the supposed glitch as being at time 00:00 is clearly a bug and should be fixed.  The time of the outage is clearly known by AstroMain is it is given it reported messages shown below.

  The report line showing the loss of Utility Power (UPS running on battery) should be shown as 'Alert' rather than 'Ok'.   Outage is reported as 'Unknown' when PowerOutageStartTime=vcNullDate, which indicates that it wasn't set,  likely because it is set when Laptop Power Monitor changes from Mains to Battery which it didn't appear to.  'Mains Power Outage/Glitch' is reported when bLaptopBatteryOutageReported = False, which confirms that power outage wasn't detected by the computer power monitor itself. Fixed in AstroMain 3.73.9, with the following new assignment in RunUpsMonitor() routine
    PowerOutageStartTime = Ups_Record.TimeStamp
  The same issue also occurred in reporting by AstroWeather's UPS Monitor on the AllSky/Weather Computer for the power glitch at 12:54:56.
  Fixed (AstroMain 3.73.9,  AstroWeather 1.27.2)

Continuous Improvement

• Sum Rain values from CloudSensor and display last 24 hours and last 5 day in graph boxes and on 5 day Rain Cs chart. This will be based on the rain summation methodoly and graphing used for the Weather Station Rain values.  The CloudSensor rain figures are unitless, but in time in might be possible to develop an emphical conversion factor to mm/h and mm.  New box graphs should be added to Current Weather Page on the Observatory's WebSite. • Add Right Hand Axis Labelling to AllSky Keograms. Currently AllSky Keograms (1,2,3,4) don't have any axis / labelling on the bottom (NightSummary1 & NightSummary2) or on the right hand side (NightSummary3 & NightSummary4).  The NightSummary5 keogram has a right hand axis but no labelling.   Priority should be given to NightSummary5, as it is used the most.

• Add a X/Y Cursor position feature to AstroColorCam's image. It would be useful if AstroColorCam could show the x/y position of the cursor on the Image Picture Box with coordinate values shown a XY pixel position in the original image, rather than screen /picture box coordinates.   . Implemented in AstroColorCam 1.2.   A later development might be to use the XY coordinates to calculate & show Az , Alt position of the cursor.

• Create an algorithim in AstroColorCam to auto-detect the presence of green & red aurora in NorthCam images. With the distinctive green & red colours in an aurora it should be feasible to auto-detect the presence and intensity and distribution of those colours in NorthCam images taken with the Observatory's new Tapo C325WB Colour Night Vision Camera. AstroColorCam already accesses images and prepares north view images, keograms and videos. It is feasible to pass on results of any image analysis and have data incorporated in NightSummmaryPlot6 as a new 'aurora' track, and as a graph created by either AstroWeather or AstroColorCam. An activity flag could also be uploaded to the Observatory Website.   In theory the presence of Aurora could be used to trigger a change in AstroColorCam's interval recording from a standard 30s to say 15s, or 10s. CoPilot was used to build some outline code that be helpful to the task.   After incorporating it into a test version of AstroColorCam and tweaking it somewhat it was shown that an algorithum was feasible. Fig 2 shows an original image from Aurora display on 2024-11-24 and below it a processed image which shows the areas in the image where the algorithum determined there was aurora was displaying, the remainder of the image is darkened.
