Session Aims & Highlights (2026-03-29)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. ShCap Imaging/Processing.  Continue testing of AstroMain/AstroShCap routines and workflow including Siril scripts

Highlights

• Targets. 21/26 planned targets were completed with 3 target partially completed. 1 target failed due to wind at start of session and 1 target (T CrB) missed slot due to a ToO target, though was redone later in the session as an injected ToO target.
• ShCap Imaging/Processing.  
• Wind.   Night for moderate/high wind. Whilst planned targets were deliberately positioned to use dome as a windshield, two ToO Targets (Jupiter and M35) were mistakenly attempted in the direction that wind was coming from and 'fatallly' suffered
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session.

• Slew table suggests that Dome didn't move during slews to 4 consecutive targets and no dome path was recorded by AstroMain's Slew Monitor (21:33 to 22:02). The Slew table suggests that Dome Slew has 0.0 deg movement during slew to 4 targets (YZ Cnc, SY Cnc RR Leo & 29/P Schwassmann-Wachman) , with Az2 (post-slew Az) being unchanged from Az1 (pre-slew Az).  However there is clealy some movement occuring as all 4 targets would have roughly the same Az in the table, but they don't , the Az values seem consistent with telescope pointing.   LOg file shows just the starting position of the Dome and doesn' list any Dome Path.. The sane issue also affected some later targets in the session.  Although not previously noted the same issue affected multiple targets during the S1411 and S1412 session.  This most likely relates to a change to a setting within TheSky6 which lost multiple settings when it was forcibily killed when AstroMain and other services were killed when issue with CCDSoft occurred at the beginning of the S1411 session, that required reinstallation of CCDSoft.  DeviceHub and MeadeGeneric logs to be examined in order to understand what is happening.   Previously (S1410 and earlier sessions) the ScopePath Monitor would see the first 'slew=True' record after just T+1.2s and see the first significant movement of the Telescope after T+3.8-4.6s.   During the S1413 session, the scope monitor will typically not see first 'fast polling record until T+4.6s and not see any significant movement of the telescope until T+8s or even up to T+17s after the slew command was sent. .   This is consistent with the issues experierence when first moving to DeviceHub 7.0.1  (see note Experience, Issues And Adjustments To Using DH7.0 2024-10-31 ) and the solution was to relex TheSky6's Telescope Polling frequency from 500ms to 2000ms.  Fix made to TheSky6 on 2026-03-30. Hopefully this will resolve issue. Examining the Slew to 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann made at 22:02 where the Telescope makes a 41 deg slew and the Dome seemingly make a 0.0 deg slew. Slew was commanded at 22:02:05.7 the first record is at 22:02:11 (T+4.8s) and the first Slew=True record is at 22:02:15 (T+9.3s) .  Slew was completed (Slew=False) at 22:02:39 (T+33.2s).  The MeadeGeneric Logs records SlewToCoordinatesAsync at 22:02:14 (T+8s),  Slewing = True at 22:02:15  and  Slewing = False at 22:02:38.  The PulsarDome Log records SlewToAzimuth Requested at 22:02:14 (T+8s), dome rotating at  22:02:15 and stationary at 22:02:22. So the dome slew is made ok but is delayed along with the telescope slew (due to delay/holdup of command within TheSky6)..   Nevertheless AstroMain's slew monitor should have picked up the dome path and it suggests the presence of a bug in this 'suboptimal' scope slew monitoring case (possibly because slewing didn't turn to True till 8s after slew was commanded). A failure to forward dome property results to AstroMain by DeviceHub looks unlikely given the DeviceHub log records. The fix was confirmed to have worked in the S1414 session (2026-03-31).

• Due to user error the Pegasus Unity Server was closed during the session which led to a series of repeated red 'UPB Connection'  events' and repeated reconnection attempts (23:12).  Whilst hunting for DeviceHub UI window, the 'PegasusAstro ASCOM Drivers Hub' dialog was brought out of the Control Panel items (see Fig 1). Finding that it was not the intended DeviceHub Window, the  PegasusAstro dialog was closed (by clicking on its top right X button). This had the effect of closing the Pegasus Unity Server - the correct course of user action should have been to minimize the window dialog.  With the Unity Server closed, ObsManager immediately recognised this as a lost UPB Connection and began routine to restart the Pegasus Unity (including the frontend), but before this could happen the process was repeated, on the next 5s cycle of the ObsManager.  This continued for around 28 cycles until all Observatory Services (incl ObsManager) were closed by the User and the AstroMain program was restarted.  Whilst the initial cause of the issue was user error, ObsManager handling was not appropriate.   During this time (23:12 to 23:14) the ObsMonitor encountered 8 exceptions with the message "The RPC Server is unavailable".  The issue with Powerbox connection is detected by ObsManager's DoSub5_MonitorPowerBoxPort() routine which produces the message "Powerbox Connection appears to have failed" and "An attempt will be made to restart the Powerbox connection" and sets the triggering flag  'bRestartPowerboxConnection = True'.   This flag is picked up by the directly following 'DoSub6_RestartPowerBoxConnection()' routine which calls  RestartPowerBoxByThread(). This raises the bRunningRestartUPB = True flag and calls RestartUnityUI() as a threaded operation. This kills "Peg.UI" (but not Peg.Server and calls OpenApplicationAndWait("Peg.UI.exe").  This likely takes longer than 5s, and means the ObsManager retries the operation to Kill and RestartUnityUI 5s later. Fixed in AstroMain 3.81.3 and tested in Observatory on 2026-04-01 by deliberately closing the 'PegasusAstro ASCOM Drivers Hub' dialog and checking that AstroMain gracefully handled the loss in connection to the UPB, and restarted Powerbox Services. The operation   operation no longer open Pegasus Unity UI, but kills any running Peg.Server process and restarts the connection to the UPB ASCOM objects (Switch, Focuser and Environment Conditions).

• Can not access DEFAULT.sxt file when trying to Set Detection Aperture during Locate Frames process.  Plate solution optimsation in CCDSoft requires adjusting the 'Detection Aperture' according to the number of stars in the image.  Error messages are being generated with the message "Error: Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Software Bisque\CCDSoft Version 5\Configuration Files\DEFAULT.sxt' is denied". This is a known (but  forgotten) side-effect from reinstalling the CCDSoft program.  which happened at the beginning of the S1411 session (2026-03-27). The problem likely affects the S1411 and S1412 sessions but wasn't noticed at the time and during post-session analysis. Fixed in-session by updating the permissions on the DEFAULT.sxt file to allow full control to users.

• After aborting M35 target, a pop-up message box dialog popped up asking whether the acquired frames should be stacked or not.  During the session ShCap imaging of M35 was inserted into the Job Queue by user as a ToO target.  When it was executed it was quickly apparent that due to wind on the western side of the observatory that the images would very badly affected by wind shake, and would be of no value.  User clicked the Abort Target to allow Job Queue to return to taking planned images on the eastern (protected) side of the Observatory.  When the bAbortTarget flag 'hit' the job executor, the targets was aborted but a pop-up dialog appeared asking whether the captured frames should still be stacked (as normal) or not. Whilst on this occasion the user was on hand to answer the dialog (dismissing it), if the abort command had come from the ObsManager, the user wouldn't have been on hand to dismiss the blocking message box, and the automated session would be held up until dawn. The message box needs to be removed.   Blocking dialog removed in AstroMain 3.81.4.

Small Defects

• ObsMonitor encountered 8 exceptions with the message "The RPC Server is unavailable" (23:12 to 23:14). During the time window when ObsManager was making repeated attempts to reconnect to the UPB Powerbox the ObsMonitor encountered 8 exceptions with the message "The RPC Server is unavailable". The ObsMonitor should look for any flags that are reporting an issue with UPB connection or restart UPB connection operations and skip the Powerbox monitoring.  This exceptions should now rarely occur as the issue that was repeatedly trying to restart the UPB connection has been fixed.  Ticket is closed after review 2026-04-01.
