Investigation - Interruptions in LAN/Internet Connectivity (2024-09-08)

Issue

1a) Connectivity to observatory computers was lost (2024-09-07 18:28).
1b) Observatory's connection to Router/Internet was lost and later re-establised but neither were logged as a General Session Event/Alert (2024-09-08 00:28)
1c) Connectivity to observatory computers was lost (2024-09-08, 00:28, 20:19  & 20:47).

Description
The computer connection from computer in the house to both observatory computers (Laptop7 & Laptop9) were lost at the same time at 2024-09-07 18:28-18:30 or so.  This was indicated by Ping Connection flags in the AstroMove program running on the Development/Analysis Computer turning from Green to Red.   It was confirmed by failures whilst attempting network folder access in Windows Explorer.  Checking the Observatory web site showed that the Observatory's ObsPic chart had stopped being refreshed at 18:28. The Household's Ethernet connection was working ok including Ethernet over PowerLine to the SkyHD Box.   A visit to the Observatory showed that neither computer had an Internet Connection, but the two computers were still connected and passing TCP/IP messages. Initially the outage last until 19:25 (57 mins outage) when the LAN/Router connection was seemingly reestablished (by itself or coincidental user action ?), but a further outage begun at 19:42  which lasted until 21:10 (88 minutes outage), though it was not until 21:40 that all observatory services were fully running again.

A broadly similar description applies to the outage beginning at 2024-09-08, 00:28 (15 min outage).  In the case of outage at 20:19 (14.5 minutes outage) and 20:47 (47.4 minutes outage), their occurence was logged and confirmed by ObsEnv pictures.

In the case of the first incident various attempts were made to fix the problem by the user (see below)  but none of these attempt worked, however they did narrow down the source of the problem.   In the end the connection reestablished itself after 57-88 minutes.  The three incidents on 2024-09-08 again all resolved themselves within 15-47 minute periods.

The issue is ranked as 'Minor' as the problem does not inherently prevent automated operations from continuing or make the Observatory totally unsafe (die to safeguards in place). It is an annoyance and it certain situations could prevent the user initiating Autostart ahead of a night session, prevent remote monitoring of session in progress and prevent Observatory from being aware of latest rain/radar predictions.

Problem with loss of Ethernet Connectivity have been previously described (see Investigation - Loss of Ethernet Connectio, 2022-12-20 )

Analysis
Since a computer in house had LAN/Connection to Router (via both WIFI and via EtherNet Over Powerline) and was still seeing the Internet ok, the problem was presumed to be due to either i) the Ethernet-Over-PowerLine adapter in the Observatory, ii) the Ethernet-Over-Powerline quality in the line going to the Observatory or with the Ethernet switch (also located in the Observatory).

Tried several things

Whilst none of the steps definitively fixed or even shorterned a LAN/Router Connection Outage, the actions as a whole have narrowed down the probable cause of the problem.

The various tests demonstrated that  :
 - the issue isn't associated with the Ethernet Switch in the Observatory
 - the issue is isn't associated with a failed Ethernet-Over-Powerline adapter,
 - the issue is instead most likely related in someway signal problem or interference in the electric cable section between the house and the observatory

It was noted that the period was accompanied by very foggy conditions but it is not known if the associated dampness in conditions was a factor in the connectivity issue or not.

Conclusion

Updates:

A Cat 6 Ethernet Cable was installed between Router and Observatory's Ethernet Switch on 2024-10-18 / 2024-10-19. As well as the expected better reliability intial speed tests show that the Cat6 Wired Ethernet Connection to Observatory is 4x faster than the preceeding Ethernet Over PowerLine Connection. For more details see Observatory - Wired Ethernet Cable Connection, 2024-10-18/19 .
