Observatory - New Weather Station (Nov 2024+)

After a couple of years thinking that a new weather station was required and having previously looked at Ecowitt models in Dec 2023 and putting the idea on hold,  further issues with intermittent data in Oct/Nov 2024 from the existing weather station's Wind Sensor even after installing new batteries it was decided today (2024-11-02) to purchase an Ecowitt Wittboy Station with Gateway (see description of Ecowitt Wittboy with GW2000 Gateway)


2024-11-12

- Ecowitt Wittboy unpacked
- EcoWitt Wittboy & GW2000 Gateway setup in a temporary configuration indoors
- Connected GW2000 Gateway to Home Lan  via the short Ethernet Cable provided.
  The station gateway appears in router's network list as 'GW2000X', with IP:  192.168.1.53
- CumulusMX.exe opened (opens cmd window)
- http://localhost:8998 used to bring up CumuluMX program
- Configuration WIZARD used to set up connection with Ecowitt weather station, using station's IP Address
  with data saved locally to "C:\Data\AllSky Imaging\Weather Station\" and with the following data units

  "tempunit":  "C"
 "windunit":  "mph"
 "pressunit": "mb"
 "rainunit":  "mm"
- Closed and reopened CumulusMX
- Noted that CumulusMX immediately began saving live gauge data to the file "realtimegauges.txt"
- After a while the it began saving data to a number of JSON files:

2024-11-20

- WN31 (additional temperture/humidity sensor) arrived today
- Set channel to Ch1 & units to Celsius (these were default settings anyway)
- Installed batteries and the placed the sensor near to GW2000 Gateway to allow it to automatically pair

- Replaced '-99' placeholders in CumulusMX's realtimegaugesT.txt template with  <#ExtraTemp1>, <#ExtraHum1> & <#ExtraDP1>
- Confirmed that CumulusMX is accessing and outputting the new sensor values correctly to the realtimeguages.txt file.
- Updated AstroWeather to read new sensor data into Ch1Temperature,Ch1Humidity & Ch1DewPoint fields in WeatherData records
- Updated AstroWeather to display new sensor (Ch1) values on Data Tab
- Changed data recording frequency to the Monthly Data Files to 1 minute.

- Mounting Pole arrived today
- Examined how the mounting pole fits to Ecowitt Wittboy and to its mounting bracket.

- 20m long 12v Power Cable and A/C Adapter arrived today
- Examined how cable will fit to Ecowitt Wittboy and to A/C Adapter

- Built and fitted Bird Spike Circle to Ecowitt Wittboy.

Ecowitt Wittboy Weather Station (GW2001)

Cumulus MX Software (4.2.1)

Cumulus is free software for retrieving, storing and displaying data from an electronic Automatic Weather Station (AWS).

Cumulus will be reviewed and examined as a potential means of transfer weather data between a newly ordered EcoWitt weather station and my AstroWeather program running on the observatory's AllSky/Weather Computer.  This is part of a project to eventually replace the Observatory's existing Oregon Scientific Weather Station & VWS Software.

Cumulus MX v4.2.1 build 4043, 19-October-2024 was downloaded today (2024-11-02) from https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Software

Design Change for Observatory's new Ecowitt Weather Station

CumulusMX's 'realtimegauges' template will have the following construction comprising 20 fields in a comma separated single line record

After installation of new equipment in Nov 2024 Ecowitt GW2000 Hub and Tapo C325WD Camara the 5 port Ethernet Hub will be fully utilised and any additional ethernet devices will require a new Hub with additional ports.

The existing Ethernet Switch is a 10/100 model, and after installation of Cat6 cable direct to the router, there may now be a benefit in using a 100/1000 Switch model.  Previously with the slower Ethernet-Over-Powerline connection there was no benefit in using a 100/1000 Switch.

Ethernet Switch Configuration

Following diagram compares the use & configuration of the Observatory's Ethernet Switch as it has been since the Clair Dome Observatory was kitted out in 2018 (and still was as at 2024-10-01), with the proposed use & configuration moving forward.
