Session Aims & Highlights (2025-12-08)

Main aims

1. Targets.  Acquire images of a selection of variable stars, nearby stars, comets & deep sky targets as allowed by sky conditions.
2. ToO Queue.  Check operation of new 'ToO queue' tab & listbox added to AstroMain 3.79.4
3. AstroMain - Check fixes and features added to AstroMain 3.79.4 .

Highlights

• Targets.  11/43 planned targets were completed, with 1 further targets partially completed. Other targets failed due to a Rain Sensor issue and due to cloud/session suspension. Two of the initially failed targets (M31 w/M31N 2025-11a & BL Lac) were then successfully acquired as ToO targets.
• Horizon Targets. 
• ToO Queue.  New 'ToO queue' tab & listbox operated correctly during the session, showing the progress of the ToO from submission through to completion.
• CCD Camera. There were no isues with the CCD Camera
•  Dome. No issues open/closing shutter. Dome was successfully parked at the end of the session

• No ObsCam pictures were captured during the session - AstroObsCam not running.  Noting that there were no ObsCam pictures when starting, , suspending and closing session, a check on Obervatory's latest image showed that it dated from 4 days previously.  This was due to AstroObsCam program not running and therefore not capturing any images from the ObsCam. AstroObsCam was restarted post-session.  A separate Continuous IMprovement ticket has been raised so that AstroMain can automatically detect AstroObsCam status and restart the program & ObsCam image capture.

• A red 'Dome Unsafe' alert was raised (18:51:41 ).  A red 'Dome Unsafe' alert was raised at 18:51:41 with the message "CloudSensor detects Rain, but Shutter Sensor is open".  This seems to have been due to a sudden change in the CloudSensor's Rain value associated with an ongoing issue the CloudSensor's internal calibration.  Whilst user can intervene to set a temporary calibration in AstroMain, the change in rain sensor value happened before this recalibration could be manually instigated.  Whilst there was no actual rain at this time, AstroMain reacted correctly as per design and began closing the dome at 18:51:42 (one second after the alert)  which was completed by 18:52:25. Closed after review 2025-12-09.

• Autostart unexpectedly failed to commence session at start of window (18:27).  AstroMain's autostart process produced the following message "Delaying AutoStart - Unable to begin autostart at 18:27 due to threat of rain".  This was unexpectedly as sky was clear, with plenty of stars, no rain, and with no rain forecast. AstroWeather's 'Data' tab was checked which confimed that there seemed to be no reason why Autostart couldn't proceed. It is suspected that there had been recent rain (not real rain, but elevated rain values from the Cloud Sensor), and the 'hold' was still in place.  Whilst the reason "due to threat of rain" is broadly true, the user typically associates this reason with a threat in the near-term weather (rain radar) forecast. Prehaps the message should be "due to recent rain", which might provide a better insight into why the hold-up is occuring.  FailureState.RecentRain = 38 added to AstroMain 3.79.6 and used in CanOpen() routine.   The routine requires more than 10 minutes since last rain before the CanOpen() can return True. An extra comment has been added to the AutoWaiting section of Obs.Manager's Main loop to state when the Last Rain was at and the time that AutoStart can begin.

• AstroMain Session unable to proceed due to elevated 'rain' values from the 'Cloud Sensor ' (19:00).  With a normal raw 'dry' value at around -200 to -206, following likely water ingress the rain sensor is now reading around -180 and falling further to -165, even though it is not raining. Whilst AstroGuard, AstroMain, AstroAllSky have the capility to set up a temporary calibation figures it requires each program to stop and restart the Cloud Sensor Service.  An 'Update Rain Trim' button was added to each of the 3 programs so that Rain Calibration figures can be reset with restarting Cloud Sensor service which is a particularly interuptive operation on the AstroMain  program when a live session is in progress.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.79.5, AstroGuard 1.12.2, AstroAllSky 3.26.3.

• Observatory was very damp when checked in the morning followin S1383 session.  A visit to the Observatory in the morning after the S1383 session showed that is was very damp with a lot of condensation / water drops on the interior of the dome roof and on the floor. A possible reason are the significant amounts of rain recently, and the fact that the Observatory Dehumidifier had filled up it water collection bucket, and had likely not be extracting humidity in the observatory for several days. Observatory floor tiles was wiped dry, and lifted to give fresh air exposure to the floor. There was some indication of water ingress below the walls, but not enough to explain the condensation/water on top of and between the floor tiles. Dehumidifier's collection bucket was emptied.  Weather is currently to wet to allow the observatory door to be left open. One issue of water in the observatory is rusting of the bottom of the telescope pier, but is not in any imminent danger, and corrision of the LX200's forks which lifts the painted surface.

• Rain Values on DaySummary and NightSummary Plots appears to have flatlined at a high value of around 46. The shaded Rain graph on DaySummary6 and NightSummary6 plot appears to have flat lined at a very high value and the 5 day Rain Plot show and solid water region with rain above above graph maximum (25) yet it is dry outside and not raining. The reason is that Raw Rain value have flipped from being around -195 to - 206 to being around -0.5 to -0.9, indicating that rain sensor head has begun working in it normal state again, rather than its flawed state with higher negative base levels
  AstroWeather, AstroGuard, AstroAllSky and AstroMain need to be modified to automatically recognise the is changes and turn off temporary recalibrations. Fixed in  AstroMain 3.79.6, AstroGuard 1.12.3, AstroAllSky 3.26.4, AstroWeather 1.29.3.

• AstroWeather UI is very sluggish. After installing AstroWeather 1.29.3 on 2025-12-11 AstroWeather's Main Console Form became very sluggish, and slow to react to selecting a different tab. The changes in 1.29.3 version shouldn't have affected the UI in any deterimental way so this might be just coincidence, but regardless the sluggish behaviour is annoying, at least when used of VNC remote connection.  Being monitored. Issue seems to have resolved itself.

• CCD Monitor was reported to be frozen (21:26:06). A 'CcdMonitor' red alert was raised at 21:26:06 with the message "CcdMonitor appears to be frozen (last cycle at 21:24:55) in section 'Monitor Cooling5'. There seems to have been no consequence of the issue and the session proceeded normally. The alert came  around 5 minutes before the Focuser 1 which would suggest it was became non-accessible at 20:31:36.  First log warning was at 21:26:02 with message "CcdMonitor is Frozen (70s) in section 'Monitor Cooling5'" suggested that CcdMonitor was last operating normally at 21:24:52, which is consistent.  Logs show that CcdMonitor was operating up to 21:24:59 when it was closed by 'Stopping Observatory' operation that was initiated by user in preparation for a Restart of the AstroMain program in order to install a program fix (related to a Rain Sensor issue).  The CcdMonitor red alerts came when a subset of the Observatory Services were briefly restarted in order to abort the Job Queue which had be accidentally left off.  CCDMonitor was stopped again a 21:26:41 when Service were finally stopped and the program closed. The issue seems to be related to a service shut-down/ start -up timing issue. with the watchdog routine picking up the earlier last-active time and interpretating the apparent absence of activity since then as being due to a frozen CcdMonitor when it was in-fact due to the CcdMonitor having being closed and not running.  Fixed in AstroMain 3.79.6, AstroGuard 1.12.3, AstroAllSky 3.26.4, AstroWeather 1.29.3. The same issue was noted in the session S1377 (2025-11-24, see notes) and S1392 (2026-01-17).  Problem was eventually fixed in AstroMain 3.80.5.

Small Defects

• Code to remove red 'Focuser1' event  when Focuser1 is quickly restored isn't working.  Code was added to AstroMain 3.79.2 so that Events saved to Events Database marking 'Lost connection to Focuser1' are deleted when the issue is quickly fixed.  However the code isn't working and the event remains in the database.  Ran through in debugger and shown to be working. Extra tracing added to AstroMain 3.79.6 to help diagnose any future incidents. ObservingDB.DeleteSessionEvent() changed so that it returns the number for events that match the name and date given. ObsManager changed to use nEventsFound and if not >0 it tries T+1s and T-1s. This didn't resolve the issue.  Examining code later showed that the code section for redacting the Red Focuser1 event had incorrectly placed withn the wrong conditional branch. Fixed in AstroMain 3.79.9 the code section for redacting the Event is moved into a 'If bFocuser1OutageReported'  conditional branch, from its former position in 'ElseIf bFocuser1OutageNoted' branch.

• ObsCam pictures appear rather blured. After restarting AstroObsCam (post S1383 session) it was noticed that pictures were rather blurred.   It is though that there might be condensation on the lens of the ObsCam camera. This seems a reasonable explanation given the amount of condensation found in the Observatory when later checked. Camera lens was cleaned and the picture seems fine.

• An attempt to open PegasusAstro Unity UI on AllSky/Weather Computer appeared to stall.  Whilst trying to run a test on the Ekowitt Weather Station and USB Control Hub, the PegasusAstro Unity UI was launched from AstroLaunch but the Unity didn't seem to open and a second attempt was made to open it from Windows Start menu, but this also appeared to stall or go nowhere. Eventually Unity UI opened, with the message that there was a new Unity Platform update.   And then later the 'second' Unity AI opened.  It is evident that the delay was due to Unity checking for an update.  The Unity UI 2.13 update offers to benefits and won't be taken at this time. To stop similar delays when starting the option to check for updates was turned off. (see Fig 1).  Further problems with Unity Platform not finding/displaying the USB Control Hub (UCH) were encountered at 2026-01-28 (see notes).

• The USB Port Voltage on the PegasusAstro USB Control Box is showing a red colour.  The USB Port Voltage is showing up with a red colour. The voltage (5.2V) is closed to a norminal value of 5V, but the red colour is distracting, should I be concerned ?.  The voltage level was queried with Pegasus Astro, who confirmed that 5.2V is normal and is the design voltage of the UCH Hub and allows for any voltage drop on any long cables.  USB ports typically operate safely with a voltage range of 4.75V to 5.25V. The red colour is likely an inappropriate threshold in Unity Platform software.

• Red 'Focuser1' alerts (Focuser1 not accessible) were raised twice during the session (20:31, 04:46).  Red 'Focuser1 alerts were raised at 20:31:36 and again at 04:46:37 with messages like "Focuser1 (TCF-LSI) not accessible (Last valid data at 20:31:12)".  In both cases ObsManager watchdog recognised the issue and automatically restarted the Focuser1 Service.  This is an ongoing issue that hasn't yet been resolved.  Issue appears to have been resolved with changes to ObsManager loop in AstroMain 3.79.10 or 3.79.11, but the specific code change that fixed the issue is unclear.
