OSC Image Acquistion, Stacking and Processing

Introduction

The Observatory's secondary telescope (TS 80) has a one-shot colour camera (ZWO ASI178MC) acquired in Jan 2017 which is used for autoguiding the main scope  (12" LX200 GPS/R) and for occasional wider field colour imaging.  (see camera's specifications)

During Autoguiding the Camera is assigned to PHD2 Application whilst for Imaging the Camera is assigned to the SharpCap Application. The management of the Camera assignments is performed by AstroMain - the observatory's proprietary Control Program, and operations are normally run under automated control.   Imaging is normally coordinated by AstroMain's Job Executor which operates SharpCap apllication though the AstroShCap Python tool running in the SharpCap environment. This acts as server interface between AstroMain & SharpCap and as the executor of a request image set.

AstroMain coordinates the management of SharpCap images during a live session and calls a script that runs Siril CLI to stack and process images after the acquistion of each image set.

Important things to note are :

Review

The reason for this review is 4 fold:

  1. an awareness that the 178MC camera isn't being used to its maximum potential, particularly in the area of secondary scope imaging.  Currently the camera is relegated to guiding duty for the main scope imaging which is normally just monochrome, so having more OSC imaging would be a useful addition to the observatory use.

    One of original aims for camera was to use it for planetary imaging through the LX200 scope, but this has not occurred due to the complexity in changing imaging setups, and this is unlikely to change.
  2. the observation that there are issues with the real time pictures being very dark / not optimally displayed.
     
  3. a need to reduce the manual effort involved in bringing each OSC image set to a polished final product by using consistent reusable pipelines.    

    This factor and the issues with dark/featureless realtime picture combine to limit the usage of the OSC camera for imaging.
     
  4. the possible future purchase of PixInsight. The cost for a PixInsight Licence  (c. £300) is quite significant and needs to be justified.

Areas to address

Areas to be addressed are:

  1. Generation of reasonable real-time pictures. Employment of optimal first-pass processing to generat realtime picture snapshots for upload to observatory's current/latest session web page (for this purpose lighter images with noise and more stars is better than images that are too dark & featureless).
     
  2. Learn more about Siril and OSC image processing
  3. Developing a pipeline / workflow for bringing each OSC image set to a polished final product
     
  4. Develop optimal image set specifications in terms of frame numbers, exposure times & gain
     
  5. Try out PixInsight using the trial (45 day) licence . Understand its potential role and usage, with comparison against Siril.

If the background is too bright
