NGC 5068 - Earlier Image with Luminous Red Nova AT
2020hat (Apr 2020) AT2020hat (Type LRN, luminous red nova) discovered 2020/04/12.475 by ATLAS (Rochester Supernova site | K. Itagaki image mag +17.9 at 2020/04/14.618 | Image (2020-04-19.941) taken 7.47 days after LRN discovery. SN shown by white cross hairs. Magnitude ? (v. faint) A LRN is is a stellar explosion thought to be caused by the merging of two stars. The luminosity of the explosion occurring in luminous red novae is between that of a supernova (which is brighter) and a nova (dimmer). The visible light lasts for weeks or months, and is distinctively red in colour, becoming dimmer and redder over time. (Wikipedia) |
