Although totally within Earth's Shadow, the moon's surface is still visible due to 
sunlight from Sun, which has diffracted through Earth's Atmosphere.
Star to left of Moon is 56 Leonis (mag +5.9)

Moon (1995-1996)

I occasionally make views of the moon through by telescope, normally when the moon is fairly new to half-moon. A moon filter to reduce glare is a necessity.  Making a short study is probably the most rewarding way of getting to know the Moon. A sketch of the area of  Mare Serenitatis/Mare Tranquillitatis is shown below.

Photographing the moon through a Teleextender is also something I've done back in 1995. Image is as follows :
